Description:
1948. General wear due to age. Letter folds.. A humorous retelling of the day August Child enlisted in the US Army for WWI, written by an unknown individual. The complete story, only half of which appears on this page, was printed in a variety of newsletters and newspapers from 1942-1948, and most often billed as a "fine example of Yankee humor, found in a soldier boy's letter". There are variations in the story across the different printings, but the majority of it remains the same. For example, sometimes it is like this item's version where the story is from the point of view of a WWI soldier who went to France, while in others it is clearly a WWII soldier who first went to Australia and then fought the Japanese. The humor in this short story not only comes from the actions of the main character, but also from the plays on words found throughout. Single page, double sided. Measures 8 1/2" x 5 1/2". Below is an excerpt from the story: "I was called in Class A. I wanted to be put in class 2-B, 2-B… Read More

Description:
United States, 1915. Very good. Minor toning, dust soiling.. Original photograph of two young women, mounted onto a thick embossed Private Post Card with the message "I am still single how are you?". The humorous novelty postcard would have been produced for the two women in a professional photographer's studio as a charming momento. Embossed card (3.75" by 6"), original oval photograph (3" by 2") mounted to recto, printed on verso with space for address and 2 cent stamp. A rather bold move on behalf of these two young ladies to attract potential suitors. "Private Mailing or Post Card" distinguished privately printed cards from government printed cards. Messages were not allowed on the address side of the private mailing cards, as indicated by the words "This side is exclusively for the Address," or slight variations of this phrase.

Below are some of the stanza of the poems, along with the chorus. "This very curious world was made For characters of every shade and every whim of man between Sage righteous and glad sighting." - Chorus " 'I never dance, I think it wrong' 'Pure joys do not to earth belong' Then canting bigot step aside; Go take a goblin for your guide." - Stanza 3 "Some call this world a 'vat of tears' And seek their Heaven this gloom offers we Hope to gain the prize of bliss In 'Wisdom's Ways of Pleasantness' " - Stanza 7 "In the pale moon's light, A ghost is seen out dead of night, On Fanting Island near the shore,… Read More
