Description:
[Nuremburg, 1713]. . Copper-engraving, with fine hand colour. Dimensions: 520 by 420mm. (20.50 by 16.50 inches). A magnificent plate from "Hortus Eystettensis", one of the earliest and most famous works in the field. The Hortus Eystettensis is a pictorial record of the flowers grown in the greatest German garden of its time, that of Prince Bishop of Eichstatt, Johann Conrad von Gemmingen. The garden was begun by Joachim Camerarius in 1596 and, after his death in 1598, completed by Basil Besler, a pharmacist from Nuremberg. A visitor, Philipp Hainhofer, in 1611 marvelled at the eight gardens, each containing 'flowers from a different country; they varied in the beds and flowers, especially in the beautiful roses, lilies, tulips.' The Hortus records this variety and beauty. The book is exceptional in every sense; in its variety and range of flowers, in its size, in its fine quality of engraving. It is also one of the earliest records of flowers from a specific, documented garden.Besler was asked to… Read More

Description:
London, William Heinemann, 1949. . First edition, first impression. 8vo. Publisher's blue cloth, titles to spine gilt, red topstain. With the pictorial dust jacket. A lovely copy in the dust jacket with just a couple of very minor tear and the merest trace of bleed from the cloth to the verso at one fold. In many ways this is the author's masterpiece. Copies this sharp are not so common.

London, Arthur Barker, 1934. . First editions, first impressions; 8vo; publisher's black cloth, titles to spines gilt, dust-jackets, that of the first title with a number of short tears but entirely unfaded and it is distinctly scarce thus, Claudius the God is also a little frayed but bright albeit with some typical rubbing at the spine, in all a very good set. A really attractive set of the I Claudius books memorably filmed by the BBC and in this condition extremely hard to find.

Description:
St. Petersbourg, [first half of 19th century]. . Watercolour (sheet: 31.5 x 23.5 cm) within an ink ruled and washed border, signed 'C. Kollmann. St. Petersbourg' in the lower left corner, slight rubbing to lower margin. Fresh original watercolour, signed by Kollmann. The subject of this charming composition is a traditional winter scene in the Russian countryside. Russian peasants are depicted transporting large blocks of ice on a horse-drawn sledge.Active in St. Petersburg, Kollmann (1786/88-1846) was one of the greatest engravers and lithographers of the nineteenth century. He worked for the established publisher Pluchart and engraved a substantial portion of Kruzenstern's atlas. Indeed, the present composition is similar in subject to the one published by Pluchart, though, to our knowledge, no lithograph reproducing this specific composition is available on the market. The scarcity of original works by this master make the present work all the more desireable.

Description:
Paris, Bertrand, 1857-[58]. . First edition; large folio; 48 hand-coloured, lithographed plates (last plate is misnumbered LXXIX) with descriptive text. The first 15 plates by Emile Théophile Blanchard (1795-1864) have both the birds and the branches coloured, while the branches are left uncoloured in the remaining plates by J. Daverne (? -1860); modern black half morocco gilt slight tear to margin plate 14, spotting, browning and toning to many of the plates as usual with this book due to the slightly inferior paper stock used, but withal a very good example of this work; housed in modern black box. Souancé's Perroquets is a fine sequel to the works of Levaillant and Bourjot Saint-Hilaire. Together these three works constitute the definitive study of parrots in France. The change of printer after the plates I-XV, resulted in the later plates having the branches uncoloured. Anker 479; Fine Bird Books 108; Jackson 161, 217; McGill/Wood 578; Nissen IVB, 887; Zimmer 598.

Camellias captured the Western imagination when travellers to Japan and China would return with the so-called 'Japan rose'. It was named camellia by Carl Linneaus, and began to be cultivated successfully and in larger numbers toward the end of the eighteenth century.Berlèse accumulated a significant collection of camellias over twenty years,… Read More
