2 works in 1 volume, 4to. 1). 24 leaves. 463 pages. 2). 12 leaves. Full vellum with overlapping fore-edges, flat spine with inked title (18th century binding). 1). Very rare edition, printed in Leuven, of the Greek paraphrase of the Institutes of Justinian, by one of its original editors. Theoophilus was a Byzantine jurisconsult who lived in the 6th century AD and taught jurisprudence in Constantinople. Regarded as the best commentary on the Insititutes and including valuable information on the peculiarities of ancient Roman law, this Greek paraphrase of the Latin original was first published in Basel in 1534 by the Dutch jurisconsult Van Zuichem (1507-1577). This edition is due to the Dutch humanist and printer Rutgerus Rescius (d. 1557); a friend of Erasmus and a distinguished Hellenist, he was Vesale's Greek teacher and first publisher.
