The epic poem by the Basque-Spanish soldier and poet Alonso de Ercilla y Zuniga (1533-1594), wherein he describes and celebrates the military conflict between the Spaniards and the Araucanian/Mapuche people of Chile. Ercilla had been a first hand witness to the conflict and participated in the fighting during his years in Chile, 1556-1563.
