Er veröffentlichte seine Beschreibung in "A Journal of Captain Cook's Last Voyage to the Pacific Ocean…"1. Teile davon gingen in Sparks' "The Life of John Ledyard, the American traveller", ein, das hier in deutscher Ãœbersetzung vorliegt. Der Amerikaner aus Connecticut führte wohl das abenteuerlichste Leben aller Begleiter Cooks. Als Jugendlicher bereits verließ er seine Familie und ging auf einem Schiff nach den Westindischen Inseln. 1773 gelangte er nach London und trat 1776 in die britische Marine ein. Bound in quarter polished calf and marbled boards, gilt titles along the spine, some offsetting on the title page, a fine copy. (ads) Sabin 40658. Letters from the Parry Expedition, 1819-1820, describing the voyage and the wintering at Winter Harbour, Melville Island, the Canadian Arctic waters and their ice, the Arctic night, the activities of the crews. Although anonymous, internal evidence shows the officer to have been one of the midshipmen on the Griper; either A.M. Skene or William Nelson Griffth. All of the letters are addressed to the author's brother, Thomas, and they contain a great deal of information about the voyage, particularly regarding conditions on the ship, the hardships of Winter Harbour, the Arctic night, the crew's morale, etc. The style is informal and `chatty' and this book makes an excellent supplement to the official admiralty account written by Captain Parry.

However, at Cyrus Field Bay a storm wrecked his boat the George Henry (named after his main sponsor George Henry Grinnell). During the wintering, he befriended local Inuit Ebierbing and Tookoolito (Joe and Hannah) who accompanied him on the rest of the expedition, and who became famous when they returned to the United States with Hall.
