With 53 mounted original albumen photos, including 36 large images from ca. 23,5x29,5 cm (9 ¼ x 11 ½ in) to ca. 16x29 cm (6 ½ x 11 ¼ in); the rest of the photos are ca. 10x13 cm (3 ¾ x 5 ¼ in) or slightly smaller. Eleven photos are captioned and numbered in negative; eight photos with period pencil captions in German on the mounts; five photos with blind stamps “G.R. Lambert & Co., Singapore.” Period style green half sheep album with cloth boards; gilt-tooled decorative borders on the boards and the spine; top edge gilt; moire endpapers. Fold marks, but overall a very good document, written in a legible hand.This document regards the sale of the Langford and Beatty Ranch, situated along the north bank of the Mokelumne River in the now-ghosted town of Elliot (first settled in 1846). Between the 1850s and 1880s, Elliott was one of the most active pioneer towns of San Joaquin County, mainly for the abovementioned ranch. The town started to lose prominence in the late 19th century due to the 1890s depression and possibly the outbreaks of tuberculosis and diphtheria. Several scenes dated Kaei 7 [1854], but possibly a slightly later, Meiji period copy. Hand-painted scroll ca. 1085x27,5 cm (ca. 35 ½ ft x 10 ¾ in). Ink and watercolour on rice paper, neatly remounted, with a silk cover and string attached to the outer end of the scroll. Housed in a more recent custom-made wooden box ca. 8x32x7,5 cm (3 x 12 ¾ x 2 ¾ in).
