Lugduni Batavorum: Apud Samuelem Luchtmans, 1728 Pharsalia, Lucan's (39-68 A.D.) great heroic poem on the struggle between Caesar and Pompey after the crossing of the Rubicon, enjoyed great popularity during the Renaissance; in fact it was probably even more popular than Virgil. This is one of the two best quarto variorum editions. The other, which appeared in 1740, adds some notes and removes others so that the serious collector would do well to have both. The editor is Frans van Oudendorp (1696-1761), professor of history and Latin eloquence at the University of Leiden, who also produced esteemed editions of Julius Caesar, Suetonius, Obsequens, Apuleius, and others. . London: Typis E.G. Impensis R. Whitakeri, 1641 Second edition of Quintilian published in England. Edited by Daniel Pareus. The first Daniel Pareus edition was published in Frankfurt in 1629, and the title-page lists H. Robynson in London as one of the booksellers. Full modern red morocco, edges sprinkled red, new marbled endpapers. . Octavo. Title-page and last leaf browned around the edges. Very good. Pareus ( (1605-35) was a philologist, born in Neuhausen. He published Historia Palatina (1633) and a respected edition of Lucretius.

Cambridge: Typis Academicis, 1716 First edition of the Zachary Pearce edition of Cicero's De Oratore. . Contemporary panelled calf with gilt brown morocco spine label, edges sprinkled red. . Octavo. One worn spot on front cover. Otherwise a fine, crisp copy. Pearce (1690-1774), a follower of the great classical scholar Richard Bentley, who later became bishop of Rochester, wrote several respected theological works, but is as much remembered for his scholarly editions, including translations of Cicero's De officiis (1745) and of Longinus's De sublimitate (1724). This, his first book, went through many editions, though the first is surprisingly scarce: ESTC lists only three copies in North America (Illinois, Ohio State, Dalhousie).

The samples are expertly executed and neatly organized, and the typewritten instructions are thoroughly annotated. Some of the annotations reference machine settings, while others identify ideal colors of thread and note the prices of various pieces of equipment for Elna machines ("Eyelet plate: $2.45"). . London: J. and C. Mozley 1864 First edition. Rebound in half modern burgundy morocco over marbled boards. Gilt lettered spine. Edges sprinkled red. . Octavo. Binding extremities rubbed. Spine lightly faded. Slight intermittent foxing. A near fine copy. Margaret Roberts (1833-1919) was a linguist, novelist, and children's writer who was born in Wales. For the majority of her life, she lived in different countries including Italy and France. She wrote over thirty works, most of them thoroughly researched historical novels, some of which were for children. Published anonymously, her first novel for adults was Mademoiselle Mori (1860); Roberts researched it at the Vatican library and wrote it in Italian, though it was eventually translated to English. Some of her more popular books include Denise (1863) and On the Edge of the Storm (1868). Later in her career, Roberts focused on composing works for younger readers, such as Stephanie's Children (1896), about a young lady in Revolutionary France.

A very good set of these fragile "vinegar valentines." These insulting valentines, commonly referred to as vinegar valentines or penny dreadfuls (sharing the nickname with Victorian-era dime novels), first appeared in the 1840s and maintained a prominent place in pop culture well into the twentieth century. Thiébault de Laveaux (1749-1827), who was professor of French at the University of Berlin. It includes engravings by Eberhard Siegfried Henne (1759-1828), theologian-turned painter and engraver, who worked with Chodowiecki. This edition not in OCLC.. Single sheet (35" x 11 ") folded in wrappers (4 " x 6"). . Sheet printed with twenty large woodcuts meant to be cut out of the sheet and assembled into two paper puppets (a character named Lord Dundreary and his dog). The puppets, if cut out and assembled, would be about fourteen inches tall. Large sheet with a tear along one fold (approx. 6"), affecting one piece of the paper puppet of Lord Dundreary. Some chipping to edges of sheet. A remarkable survival given that this item was meant to be cut apart for play. A very good copy of a fragile and rare item. The Little Modeller series from G. Clarke & Co., of which this is number forty-nine, introduced a line of jointed paper puppets. The puppets of Lord Dundreary and the dog Toby include jointed legs and arms to create a dancing effect. Small nick in front wrapper near foot of spine. Otherwise a fine copy, uncut and unopened Cravan (1887-1918) was a larger-than-life idol of the Dada movement. Aside from his influential journal, which extended to five issues (1912-1915), he was known for his self-proclaimed family relation to Oscar Wilde (who had married his father's sister) a boxing match with Jack Johnson, and several other daredevil stunts.
