Description:
[TWAIN, MARK] [Clemens, S. L.] Flanagan, John. MARK TWAIN, CENTENARY OF HIS BIRTH... New York: Medallic Art Co. [1935] Bronze paperweight issued for the Mark Twain centenary with portrait of Twain sitting in chair smoking a pipe in relief, with smaller images of Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn with an aphorism between them: "Always do right. This will gratify some people and astonish the rest." The Medallic Art Company hallmark appears on the lower rim. The American sculptor John Flanagan (1865-1952) designed this piece, and it bears his initials. Flanagan studied under Augustus Saint Gaudens, and was one of the leading…

[TWAIN, MARK] [Clemens, S. L.] Hall, Hartwell & Co. MARK TWAIN SHIRT COLLARS. Troy [New York]: Hall, Hartwell & Co.., Inc., 1921. One box, with eight unused shirt collars, each in its original cellophane wrapper. The collars are mint. Three are Mark Twain style collars; and five are a fancy style by the same company. The box has a few nicks and stains, but is quite sound. Stiff white starched collars were an essential element of formal attire at the turn-of-the-century. Twain's name and image were used without his permission to sell a variety of products during his life and ever since: oysters, lemons, oranges, cereal,…

Description:
[TWAIN, MARK] [Clemens, S. L.] Voigt Milling Company. MARK TWAIN FLOUR. Grand Rapids, Michigan, ca. 1900. Original paper flour sack, 25 lb. size, printed in bright colors with large portrait of Twain. Very fine unused example; this larger size is quite rare (most surviving sacks are the 5 lb. size). An unusual and very attractive example of the exploitation of his name and image. This company was formed as a partnership in 1898, began milling Mark Twain Flour by 1900, and continued selling it under that name until 1951; the company closed in 1955. The brochure that advertised this style of bag describes this flour as a "recent…

[TWAIN, MARK] [Clemens, S. L.] MARK TWAIN CIGARS, LIKED BY ALL. [Baltimore: Parker Metal Dec. Co., ca. 1913-1931] Tin advertising sign, 10 x 28 inches, printed in raised red letters on a yellow background, within red border. This is the sign used to advertise the five cent cigars whose unused inner box labels are commonly seen; the sign is quite scarce, the result of a small cache of these signs found years ago inside the wall of a house. The proofs for the cigar box label and cigar band were dated 1913, but the trademark was not registered until 1931, after production had begun. This brand of cigar, distributed by Wolf…

Pasadena, California: Radiant Life Press, 1919. 8pp., folio, illustrated with four previously unpublished photographs of Twain. First edition, an offprint from the May, 1919 issue of `Physical Culture.' Self-wrapper. Nearly fine. This was privately printed by James, whose ads for his own books cover the last two pages. James quotes liberally from Twain's works, and gives an amazing account of how he came to get Twain to pose for the four photographs reproduced here. A very rare piece.…

[TWAIN, MARK] [Clemens, S. L.] Eubank Dolls. MARK TWAIN DOLL [Hannibal, Missouri, n.d., circa 1940-1952] Handmade papier mache doll of Mark Twain, dressed in a suit, black shoes, ten inches tall, with flexible arms and legs (a feature that makes this doll especially attractive --Twain can easily be posed to stand on his head, sit on a bookshelf, hang from a light fixture, do splits, practice Yoga, etc.). Wilma Eubank Pulliam made dolls in Hannibal and sold them as souvenirs; they were among the first Mark Twain dolls ever made, and each was slightly different from the others.
