1970. Minimal wear.. A 6 3/4" x 8 3/4" sample book with 10 different examples of fine macramé knotting. Worked in white and/or white and red. Narrow gauge cord. Most measure approximately 3 1/2" x 2 1/2". The largest is 5" x 5". Fabric covered album with shoelace binding. Some of the earliest recorded uses of macramé-style knots as decoration appeared in the carvings of the Babylonians and Assyrians. We are more familiar with the art of knotting (rather than weaving or knitting) during the Victorian era and the 1970s. My spider plant hung in a macramé hanger.

8.13, 1900. Includes two images of Franklin Pierce only.. Housed in a 3 1/2" x 6 1/2" illustrated envelope with an image of George Washington at left. It is Series 5. Millard Filmore, Franklin Pierce and James Buchanan. Directions indicate using a light pencil to rub over the page and the picture of a present and his biography will appear. It also promotes the purchase of the complete book of 25 Presidents from Washington to Roosevelt for 10 cents. Reverse of the envelope is blank. . It appears that this envelope includes two impressions of Franklin Pierce. Unused.

Sydney, Australia: H. E. C. Robinson Pty. Ltd, 1945. General wear. Minor separation at folds.. A map of the British Solomon Islands, specifically: Choiseul, Vella Lavella, Ganongga, Gizo, Kolombangara, New Georgia, Rendova, Tetepare, Vangunu, Gatukai, Santa Isabel Island, Florida Island, Malaita, Bougainville, Shortland Island and San Cristoval. The map shows a variety of government and missions stations, along with the villages and towns on the islands. Included are two insets and one location map. When the map is folded, there is a panel titled of "Magic Isles of the Coral Sea : Solomon Islands", with an illustration of one of the native tribesmen of the islands. Written in pen on the backside of the map is "Lt. Col. Russell E. Nicholls, Sig. [Signal] Corps". As such, based on the biography of Nicholls, this map was most likely given to him after he achieved the rank of Lt. New York: Merry-Day House, Inc, 1946. unpaginated. Printed color illustrated board over cloth spine, color illustrated end papers, color and two-tone (red and black) illustrations by Judy Varga. Little Bobby could not find his sheep. He was sad because his family was poor and would not be able to eat if they could not sell the wool from the sheep. He found a baby lamb and fed it his dinner (red beets), in the morning the snow white lamb had turned red and the little wool he had increased and made a scarf. Each night they fed the lamb a different food and each morning the lamb made a different color scarf until spring time when he ate the fresh grass and flowers and something extra special happened. 7 3/4" x 10" some discoloration.

The Sanatorium was established for the treatment and cure of people with pulmonary diseases, specifically tuberculosis. There is a brief history of the Sanatorium, as well as a description of the premises and the amenities. There are also images from photographs throughout of areas like the dining room, the living spaces, and the sleeping place. Information regarding the prices and treatment plans are included as well. 7 3/4" x 5 1/2"

Alton, Belknap, New Hampshire, 1831. Eight (8) pages stitched together with string binding; no covers. Includes 11 different entries from friends and family. The first entry from a male friend concludes with "when this you see Remember me". All entries written inverse and with sentiments of friendship and love, including entries from here sisters Mary and Sally. One entry from John M. Kinne who is bidding Nancy farewell "so you and I must part..." Concludes with an acrostic and a note to "My Friend" that concludes "But may I speak a word or two Concerning what I think of you If so you're pleasant gentle kind And you possess a solid mind". The adage from the first entry When this you see remember me seems to holds true throughout the booklet. Measures 3 1/2" x 5 1/4" Mary J. Rogers (1804-1876) married William Calef (1795-1858).

Fargo, North Dakota: North Dakota Agricultural College Extension Service, 1938. Very good. Toned, wrappers loose and chipped.. A late 1930s monograph on ornithology in North Dakota by O.A. Stevens of the North Dakota Agricultural College. The monograph argues birds are essential to agriculture for many reasons, chief among which is that they eat pests and insects associated with crop loss. Bird food, conservation, identification, and migration is discussed. Each species of native bird is discussed at length, describing its physical characteristics as well as is peculiar nesting habits or behavior. 8vo (8.75" by 5.75"), pp. 44 (wrappers inclusive), with index of bird species on lower wrapper. Photo illustrated.

Washington, D.C.: U.S. Public Health Service, 1937. Very good. Toning. Minor tearing/surface wear to lower wrapper.. A government-issued public health pamphlet on sex education and venereal disease for American men in the armed forces in 1937, featuring an image of a rugged man climbing a mountain on the upper wrapper with the word "MANPOWER" in all caps. Covers the dangers of gonorrhea, syphilis, chancroid, quack doctors and medicines. Note the importance of eugenics to the pamphlet's aim: "[Man's] only means of affecting the racial stock of his country is by his physical fitness. By one false step he may infect the stock ... Sex uncontrolled is disaster and a wreck. Sex in control for men means Power" (inside of upper wrapper). Chittenango, N.Y., 1845. Red textured cover, interfoliata. Compiled by Thomas Houston and Alfred Bellamy, Printed by John Dow. A collection of 122 hymns "appropriate for social and family worship." Headings include Invitations of the Gospel, Christian Acts and Exercises, Missions, and Family Worship. Interfoliata is torn from another book with the inscription "Oct. 23, 1845 Mrs. S Curry a Life Member." OCLC: 5 (9/12/2016) 4 1/2" x 2 3/4" cover has wear, inscribed by Isaac Curry, foxing.

United States, 1930. Very good. Some occasional offsetting and browning from textiles onto paper; some sheets loose and chipped; extremities of binder worn.. Manuscript lesson plan book with fabric samples and buttons belonging to Elizabeth Zak, a student of a textile course. Divided into several "contracts" (i.e. classes) over five weeks, the course taught students to recognize materials, judge their quality and best uses, and understand their care. Zak's notes are meticulous, and seem to have received good feedback; occasional penciled notes throughout from the instructor read "Excellent", "OK", or "Beautiful Page" above her work. Samples of everything from chambray and silk to terry cloth and stencil-dyed fabric are included, along with different kinds of raw fibers and notions such as buttons, yarns, and lace trim. New Paltz, NY, 1832. Light toning. . A 2 1/2" x 3 7/8" manuscript bookplate reading "Samuel B Stilwell's Book - New Paltz June 28 1832 for Sam Stilwell By Steph Stilwell. Stephen is presumably Samuel's brother. Calligraphy decorative devices and flowers. Reverse is blank.

Pacific Ocean: Empire Line, 1900. Fine. Some light toning; one short tear to foot (approx. 1-inch).. Handwritten on-board dinner menu on illustrated company stationary for the Empire Line's SS Pennsylvania, dated February 22, 1900. Offerings include over twenty dishes including Bouillon of Bass, Fricadell a la Neapolitan, Lemon Jelly, and Blanc Mange. Measures 8" by 5"; verso blank. The SS Pennsylvania was a steamship built in 1872 by William Cramp & Sons. For the majority of its life, it served as a passenger vessel on transatlantic routes, but was was briefly requisitioned as a troopship in the Spanish-American War. Afterwards it was sold to the Empire Line in 1898 as a passenger liner on its route from Seattle, Washington, to Nome, Alaska. It was ultimately destroyed in a fire in 1918.

Massachusetts, 1847. Very good to fine; some light toning and dust soiling, remnants of wax seals, the occasional short tear, one small excision to letter dated Aug. 17, 1837, affecting 3 lines of text; sender's name excised, and some text loss from tears, on letter dated Feb. 5, 1846.. A group of fourteen (14) manuscript letters addressed to Anna Angier Fay (1787-1827) and her daughter Lavinia H. Fay (dates unknown) of Southborough, Massachusetts. Senders include Anna's sister Eliza Angier Warriner of Frankfort, Maine, and friends of Lavinia. Four of the letters are from Eliza, who writes Anna to ask for news and to discuss religion with much zeal. The 1843 letter from Eliza to Anna excerpts news from her own received letters including one from their Uncle Roland Angier, who emigrated with his family West: "[The family] did not know how far they should go, but wanted to go to Iowa ... they are all in good spirits. 1928. Light cover wear.. A hand crafted paper book with 24 leaves. It includes 10 watercolors of ships throughout the ages from the first log canoe to a 1920s passenger liner. Each full page watercolor is accompanied by an informational narrative. The center of the book includes a center-fold of a printed illustration by Charles S. J. Delacy - Section of the 'Revenge'. The illustrations are well executed although done by an amateur hand. The book opens with a copied verse CARGOES by John Masefield, that begins Quinquireme of Ninevah from distant Ophir Rowing home to haven in sunny Palestine, With a cargo of ivory And apes and peacocks... It concludes: Dirty British coaster with a salt-caked smoke stack, Butting through the Channel in the mad March days With a cargo of Tyne coal, Road rails, pig lead, Tirewood, ironware, and cheap tin trays. Questions to be answered: four (4) specific questions answered about business and travel, Special Caution: during the next two years you should be very careful..., Prospects for the years 1901 and 1902...: During the first three weeks in May, 1901 and the first three weeks in June of the same year be very cautious... United States: The Narcisses Club, 1930. Very good. Minor toning, spotting, one or two nicks to edges.. What appears to be a tongue-in-cheek fictional speech given at a meeting of "The Narcisses Club" in which one of the governing members relates faux news to the others: "We are going to have an entertainment as well as a social ... Miss Bundy will render a solo (this is if her cold will permit her) but I know she will sing any way in spite of her cold as she is very conceited over her voice (You must not tell her I say this) but she thinks she can sing better than Ellen Beacher Yaw" (Yaw was a popular soprano from 1908 until her death in 1947). Eight (8) leaves of 8" by 5" lined notebook paper fastened together at head with decorative blue and cream lace ribbon. A cathartic writing on thoughts we often don't speak.

Princeton, New Jersey, 1836. Very good. Toned. Letter folds, remnants of wax seal to final page. Tape repair and short open tear to lower leaf.. Manuscript letter addressed to the Rev. John McCluskey from a Seminary student, William. G. Bell, who graduated from the Seminary in 1836 and became a pastor in Missouri. The letter discusses the Princeton Seminary and contains invaluable information about life there in the 1830s. For example, Bell describes the instructors as "very learned men" of "eminent ability & merit", and laments the imminent departure of one Wm. Bradley at the end of the next "session" (i.e. semester, perhaps). Bell praises the lectures of Dr. Alexander, but notes that Dr. Buch(?) has not yet "devoted his entire attention to his official duties". Bell is concerned by the lack of housing for students, stating that "Boarding is not only scarce, but excessively high, especially in private families. A 10" x 6" page that appears to have been removed from a ledger or journal with two entries that appear to be in different hands. The first is a cure for hydrophobia that entails mixing elecampane root, a puff of madder and a quart of new milk brought to boil in a water bath. This mixture is taken multiple times for several days. The second is a cure for cancer using white ash branches that have been burned to ash, making a strong lye boil as strong as possible, with lard and flour to make a plaster. Applied to Cancer for 48 hours "the torture endured by the patient is something horrible". This is followed by a half-strength plaster for three weeks, at the end of which "the cancer can be drawn out with ease and the patient is cured" Reverse is blank. No indication as to author, date, local etc. c1880s.
