1924. Manuscript. Good. octavo, 51 pages, written on letterhead of the Department of the Interior, United States Geological Survey, rectos only, neatly inscribed in pencil and ink, very good. This account appears to have been a draft and may have been intended for publication, there are numerous corrections, changes and emendations throughout the work. The unidentified author traveled by rail from Yellowstone to Seattle and from there to Alaska by steamer. The author visited Ketchikan, Seward, Anchorage, Fairbanks, where time was spent with the Mayor, Valdez, Juneau, Prince William Sound, Cordova, Columbia Glacier, etc. The author comments upon the events of the trip and gives interesting information on accommodations for tourists, describes the scenery and topography, a twelve page description of Columbia Glacier, and also describes the towns and cities visited. Benjamin Franklin Burnham was born 2 April 1826 in Enfield, Grafton County, New Hampshire. Burnham enlisted, in Co. C of the 15th New Hampshire Regiment, on 13 September 1862, he was 36. Burnham served under Captain Moses Lang. He mustered in on 8 October 1862 as a musician. The regiment was organized and left Concord, New Hampshire for Louisiana in December 1862.

Gilbert Van Mater, descendant of early Dutch settlers, was born in Middletown, Monmouth County, New Jersey, June 7, 1762, and died in Brooklyn, New York, July 6, 1832. He married Margaret Sprague, a Brooklyn native (1763-1798) about 1785, the couple had three children before her death.
Van Mater was a farmer and merchant in Brooklyn and was active in the business, civic and religious life of Brooklyn. He served as Overseer of the Poor for the town of Brooklyn, he was an investor in, and supervisor of the Brooklyn, Jamaica & Flatbush Turnpike, he served as a fireman in Brooklyn beginning in 1788 and was a member and vestryman of St. Ann's Episcopal church.
The book records receipts for a variety of transactions covering many aspects of Van Mater's life and includes many prominent New York names: Vanderbilt, Stuyvesant, Bogardus, Wyckoff, Crolius, Roosevelt, Rapelye, Remsen, Boerum, amongst others, neighborhoods in Brooklyn are also mentioned, Bushwick, Newtown, etc.

The letters are copied on thin tissue like paper, some are faded, some spotting to text, but overall in very good legible condition. Contains several hundred letters, there are many pages with two letters per page pertaining to Browning's Nursery business.
The volume contains copies of O. F. Browning's outgoing correspondence concerning his nursery and plant business. O. F. Browning was located at 7 Murray Street in New York City and later in Chatham, Columbia County, New York, Browning gives his precise location as Chatham 4 Corners. Manuscript estate inventory for little known pioneer American seedsman and gardener George Morris dated 1794. There is almost no documentation for Morris and thus he is little known today, but he sold seeds to Thomas Jefferson and James Madison.
The inventory lists Morris's surviving stock including" 31 Lots of Poplar Trees" "28 of Peach trees", as well as other types of peaches, Weeping Willows, Apple trees, currant bushes, raspberries, Peach Rose, Lombard Poplars, Roses, cherries, "1 Passion flower", a "pomegranate shrub", "1 artichoak", as well as boxes, barrels and kegs of seeds. Small quarto, 110 manuscript pages, bound in half leather, contemporary marbled paper backed boards, spine cracked, boards detached, worn, rubbed, paper good, entries written in a legible hand, and dated 18 June to 8 September 1868.The diary records the incidents and events on a journey departing from New York harbor and arriving in Queenstown, Ireland on June 26th. He writes every day during the ocean voyage, describing shipboard life, the account consists of 25 manuscript pages, followed by a further 85 manuscript pages which vividly describe his adventures while in Europe, making a total of 110 manuscript pages. The diary ends on 8 September 1868, while he is touring Paris, France.

210 letters, 298 manuscript pages, most with retained mailing envelopes, dated 1870-1888, the bulk are written in the1880s. Most of the correspondence consists of business letters that are addressed to Horace Kellogg Parsons, a merchant at Florence, Massachusetts. Of the 210 letters written to Parsons, over half (116 letters, 150 pp) of them are written by George F. Fuller, a merchant of Springfield, Massachusetts. Other merchants like Thomas Halloran writes 7 letters (11 pp) to Parsons, and Norton & Warren write 5 letters (5 pp). A relative, Theodore Parsons, writes 3 letters (3 pp) to Parsons. Manuscript ballad, entitled: Bold Dighton, with text of lyrics nearly – but not exactly – identical to the printed song sheet held by the Library of Congress, undated but probably printed by Deming in Boston circa 1829-1831. Bold Dighton begins: "Come all ye bold seamen who plough the rough main Give ear to my ditty the truth I will explain Tis of our misfortune in time of great war And how we escapt from the French at Bassatere…" And it goes on to relate the battle between the French forces and the American and British prisoners, their escape from Guadeloupe and eventual freedom. small quarto, 84 pages plus blanks, entries written on lined paper, in ink, bound in half black leather, marbled paper covered boards, worn at tips of spine, corners and edges of boards, boards scuffed, outside hinges of binding mostly open, but boards attached, text block good. Volume was printed by "R.C. Root, Anthony & Co., Stationers, Printers & Lithographers, No. 16 Nassau St., cor. Pine, New York." Front board contains paper label with "Estimate Book" written on it, Includes index in front of book with names of 24 different individuals or companies.
The first 84 pages of text consists of the "Estimate Book" of the contractor, recording various contracts that he appears to have bid on, given estimates, and perhaps in some cases eventually secured the contract. Some pages have "entered" with a circle around it, as if to say that this bid was accepted. Other estimates show changes, or monies subtracted.
