Description:
BEAUTIFULLY HAND-COLOURED AND HEIGHTENED IN GOLD AND SILVER small 4to. x, 329, [1 (printer's slug)]pp., very numerous wood-engraved coats of arms each brilliantly hand-coloured and heightened in gold or silver, contemporary full vellum, small gilt tool at each corner of the boards, smooth spine gilt lettered and with the same gilt tool, turn-ins richly gilt decorated, marbled endpapers, top edge gilt, some trifling dusty marking on covers. A very nice copy. First published in 1859 and revised for this edition. In this copy the coats of arms (at least one on almost every page) have been expertly hand-coloured and heightened in silver or gilt throughout. This combined with the attractive vellum binding has created a particularly attractive record of the Victorian obsession with aristocratic lineage.
