GARRISON & MORTON 4993 OSLER 1384"Braid inaugurated modern hypnotism, the word itself being introduced by him" [Garrison & Morton].Braid, a Manchester doctor, was stimulated by his attendance at a local seance to investigate carefully the phenomena he had observed. His careful, sceptical, and physiologically oriented experiments led him to the "apparently new laws of nervous sleep ... soon [to be] accepted throughout the world as Hypnotism and Hypnosis, the names he proposed in this book" [Hunter & Macalpine Three Hundred Years of Psychiatry].

2 parts bound together in 1 volume tall 8vo. iv, 197; iv, [192]pp., 96 splendid plates printed on light card in gold or silver and embossed with the designs of all of the many hundreds of coins shown, each plate with an accompanying leaf of text describing the coins, tissue guards, contemporary black leather, sides with broad gilt-rolled panel, spine panelled by raised bands with the panels richly gilt tooled, all edges gilt, some light foxing else a fine and particularlly handsome copy.

4 vols. large 8vo [2], ii, [2], 340; [2], ii, 2, 336; [2], ii, ii, 334; [2], ii, ii, 332pp., 46 wood engraved plates (42 fashion plates and 4 portraits) plus 48 hand-coloured fashion plates, contemporary half purple leather, spines decorated in gilt in panels and with black labels, patterned cloth on sides, leather on spines faded to a light tan, else very good.

BEAUTIFULLY HAND-COLOURED AND HEIGHTENED IN GOLD AND SILVER small 4to. x, 329, [1 (printer's slug)]pp., very numerous wood-engraved coats of arms each brilliantly hand-coloured and heightened in gold or silver, contemporary full vellum, small gilt tool at each corner of the boards, smooth spine gilt lettered and with the same gilt tool, turn-ins richly gilt decorated, marbled endpapers, top edge gilt, some trifling dusty marking on covers. A very nice copy. First published in 1859 and revised for this edition.In this copy the coats of arms (at least one on almost every page) have been expertly hand-coloured and heightened in silver or gilt throughout. This combined with the attractive vellum binding has created a particularly attractive record of the Victorian obsession with aristocratic lineage.
