These fine plates by Owen Jones are of the alphabet and each plate depicts a single letter in different art forms, superbly colour printed by Day & Son and heightened in gold. A magnificent book and one of the cornerstones of Victorian book production.

Kyoto: Bundaiken Uhei, 1710.. Original woodblock printed map, (118.5 x 144.5 cm.), folding into original blue grey covers (24 x 18.5 cm) preserving original paper label to upper cover. An extremely clean copy in excellent condition. The celebrated first Buddhist world map printed in Japan illustrating "the fusion of Buddhist dogma and Western geographical knowledge" (Jones). The author, Hotan (1654-1728), was a scholar-priest and founder of the Kegonji Temple in Kyoto. The earliest known example in Japan is the Gotenjiku Zu (Map of the Five Indies) by the priest Jukai dating from 1364 and now preserved in Horyuji Temple in Nara. However Hotan's map was revolutionary in being the first printed Oriental map to introduce detailed Western cartographic information into this traditional Buddhist cosmological view and to attempt to merge the two together into a comprehensible form. Original hand-coloured engraving (23.5 x 14.5 cm) from the first British edition of Elements of Botany: Or, Outlines of the Natural History of Vegetables. The first edition, printed for the author in Philadelphia in the previous year, is the first botanical textbook to have been published in America. Benjamin Smith Barton (1766-1815) was an American botanist, naturalist, and physician. He was one of the first professors of natural history in the United States and built the largest collection of botanical specimens in the country. He wrote the first American textbook on botany.

Paris Typographie de Firmin-Didot Frères, Rue Jacob, no. 24 [c. 1835]. 97 x 65 cm. Divided into 17 sections detailing aspects of Napoleons life and legacy, each of which has been given a water-colour wash. A portrait of a statue of Napoleon features prominently in the upper-central portion of the print, along with three small vignettes. Framed by a decorative border. Damage to the lower right-hand corner, and a slight tear near the upper-mid portion. 4th Édition. Éditeur: C. Pain, Place Dauphine, no. 13.

Uncut and unpressed in original boards with label to spine. 7 full-page aquatint plates, folding map of Tripoli and Tunis. Binding rubbed and a little stained, still very attractive. Map with some light damp staining. A wide margined fresh and clean copy. Second and best edition, published a year after the first. A handsomely illustrated work, with 7 aquatint plates (the first edition contains 5). The plates mainly depict customs, antiquities, and the manners & architecture of the region. The work is ostensibly a collection of letters written by Miss Tully, sister-in-law of Richard Tully, British Consul in Triupoli; it is arguably one of the most valuable sources of information on Tripoli and the region of the early 19th century. "These travels were actually undertaken in 1805-6, but Gell decided to publish them in 1823 in order to combat the growing philhellenic sentimentality about Greece and the Greeks. He wanted to show what Greece was really like before the revolution. In his preface he says '...those who have never witnessed the effects of habit, on persons educated in a state of political slavery, are apt to be too certain that their own feelings are echoed by the sentiments of such victims as those who are now engaged in the struggle.' The plates include views of Mega Spileon, Navarino, Mistra, Orchomenos, Arcadia (Kyparissia)" (Blackmer). (Blackmer, 665).

Rare account of the British Fleet activities in the East Indies against the French. 8vo, (18.4 x 11.2 cm). 1 ff., 82 pp. Bound in modern marbled paper wrappers, all edges dyed red. Corner of p. 45 torn, slightly affecting text, generally very good. Upon the declaration of war between England and France in March 1744, a Squadron of four men-of-war under the command of Commodore Barnet was sent to the East Indies to protect our interest in this area, and to capture or destroy any French ships they may encounter. "The boats called at Jaccatra and particulars are given of Java, Amboyna, etc. with mention of the massacre of the English traders there by the Dutch, also the massacre of 70,000 Chinese whom the Dutch feared were going to rise against them. Figures: 1-2: African snakes; 3: Narrow-mouthed toad; 4: Frog. Very good condition. Seba, the son of a Frisian peasant, was an apothecary who became rich in the service of the Dutch East India Company. Described as a 'prototypical collector' of natural curiosities and exotic species, his collections ranged from the beautiful to the obscure, including birds, reptiles, lizards and snakes, butterflies and other insects, shells and exotic sea life, unusual mammals such as bats and anteaters, as well as exotic plants. His collection also included some fantasy animals, intended to attract attention and interest, such as a seven-headed hydra.

Depths soundings profusely indicated across the chart, those areas with depths of 18 feet or under shaded in light blue/green. A few annotations in pink ink. The whole folded into six. Very good condition.

Decorative scrolling and title cartouche around the edges of the maps. (Map 22 x 29.5 cm, overall sheet 27.5 x 36 cm). Original outline colour. Centrefold crease as issued. In very good condition. For the Great Exhibition in 1851 John Tallis (1817-1876) worked with engraver John Rapkin (1815-1876) to publish the 'Illustrated World Atlas', whose maps were later re-issued by the London Printing and Publishing Company. Their maps are prized for their wonderful steel-engraved vignettes showing the peoples, customs, architecture, landmarks, flora, and fauna of each country.

Original colour lithographed map (74 x 100 cm) of the South-East Asian Theatre of World War II extending from Japan in the north to Indonesia in the south, India in the west and the Marshall Islands in the west. Old stamp of The London Book Co. (India) of Peshawar above title. Small tear in top right corner just encroaching onto border, a few trivial nicks and splits along folds, generally a very good clean example. An extremely scarce map printed in Bombay by G. Claridge & Co. Ltd. who are better known for their large lithographic travel posters. We can trace no copies of this map at auction and OCLC returns just one copy at Carleton University in Canada.
