Description:
A rare edition published in London by George Vickers. Mendelssohn (Sidney) South African Bibliography volume 1 page 546: "A Nobody in Mashonaland" was a very well-known journalist and amateur cricketer in Kimberley, where he was on the staff of the now long defunct Daily Independent. The volume is written in a humorous and entertaining manner, and the hardships, dangers, and privations encountered in the early days of the settlement are depicted in a most graphic style. The chapter on Lord Randolph Churchill shows that somewhat eccentric nobleman in a not altogether attractive light, and the transient glimpse of Mr. Rhodes is as distinct as a silhouette. The lion stories are very thrilling, and the escape from the crocodile must have been a very near thing for the adventurous tenderfoot. An extremely good picture is drawn of the position of the settlers in Mashonaland at this period, and while the beauties of the scenery of the country are occasionally dwelt on with some admiration, no glamour is… Read More

Description:
Sturdily rebound first edition. Complete with four color chromolithographs, one monochrome plate, and four in-text engravings, plus colored folding map. Galton traveled and explored with Charles John Andersson.
Francis Galton's brilliant travel account of his time spent exploring the Tropics of South Africa. At the time of this expedition South West Africa was still little explored, with his vivid account filling in the gaps of knowledge relating to the areas between the Cape Colony and the western Portuguese settlements, and towards Lake Ngami. Galton travelled in a party of nearly forty men. Galton was a noted polymath, a proponent on social Darwinism (Galton and Darwin were cousins)

Description:
Hand-crafted facsimile reprint of the 1789 edition published in London by JohnsonWilliam Paterson's "A Narrative of Four Journeys Into The Country of The Hottentots, and Caffraria. In The Years One Thousand Seven Hundred and Seventy Seven, Eight, and Nine"
This is a very scarce book because the copper-plate illustrations are so sought-after. The 1789 edition is expensive (over $1200), so this beautiful facsimile reprint edition is the next best thing.
William Paterson was a Scottish soldier, explorer, Lieutenant governor and botanist best known for leading early settlement in Tasmania. A native of Montrose, Scotland, Paterson was interested in botany as a boy and trained in horticulture at Syon in London. Paterson was sent to the southern African Cape Colony by the wealthy and eccentric Countess of Strathmore to collect plants. He arrived in Table Bay on board the "Houghton" in May, 1777. He made four trips into the interior between May 1777 and March 1780, when he departed.
