Description:
Saville Row, 26 February 1844. 4 x 5 inches, in fine condition. From the autograph book compiled by Hugh Welch Diamond (1809-1886), "the father of psychiatric photography". Uncommon. Thomas Joseph Pettigrew FRS (1791 –1865), sometimes known as "Mummy" Pettigrew, was a surgeon and antiquarian who became an expert on Ancient Egyptian mummies. He became well known in London social circles for his private parties in which he unrolled and autopsied mummies for the entertainment of his guests. The phrase “sed tamen in pretio” is in Latin. It translates to “but still valuable” or “yet of worth.” It conveys the idea that something may have a cost or price, but it remains valuable or significant. In life, there are often things that hold intrinsic worth beyond their monetary value.

Description:
1 January 1669. 1 page 9 x 7 inches, minor blemishes only, docketed on verso. Sir John Cox (d. 1672), naval officer and administrator. Sir John Cox commanded the Mary in 1665. In 1666, he commanded the Sovereign. At the time of the Four Days Battle, the Sovereign was laid up, needing more men for the crew. He fought in the St. James's Day Battle in the Sovereign (102 guns), where he was assigned to the Generals' division. In 1668, he commanded the Charles (96 guns). In 1669 he returned to Chatham as resident commissioner, replacing the discredited Peter Pett. Cox had already been at odds with this influential family, the Petts having a quasi-monopoly of dockyard offices at Deptford and Chatham. Due to the influence of the Petts, his efforts to end corruption at Chatham were a failure. Indeed Pepys had expressed concern at Cox's return to Chatham, suggesting that it would be better to appoint John Tippetts to Chatham and Cox to Portsmouth, allowing both the advantage of working where they… Read More

Description:
Versailles, 26 January 1763. In French. 1 page 9 x 6 inches, corner clipped, in very good condition. With a typed English translation. Louis-Sextius de Jarente de La Bruyère (1706-1788), Bishop of Orleans from 1757. “Well liked in court, he was appointed Minister of Profit Sheets and was responsible for distributing the revenues of the various abbeys, churches and their farmland from 1757 to 1771. During this period, 75 bishoprics and 337 abbeys are attributed, which alludes to the importance of this very coveted and lucrative position. The solicitors crowd around him. ... Finding church life mundane, he frequented salons earning a good living. Jarente was the victim of numerous pamphlets accusing him of having had for his mistress Guimard". Thus, at the end of the 1770s, Mlle. Guimard, who was in need of money, had the idea - which may have been suggested to him - to open an "income bureau", offering to forward Jarente requests from clergy for salary increases, these… Read More
