Within his lifetime visualisation began to be achieved and clinical gastroenterology emerged as a speciality.

December 1744 in Röthenberg (Würtemberg) geboren. Er hatte in Tübingen Medicin studirt und war daselbst auf Grund einer Dissertation "De vi corporum organisatorum assimilatrici" 1766 promovirt worden. Im Jahre 1782 wurde er zum Prof. ord. der Medicin an der Universität in Tübingen ernannt und in dieser Stellung ist er bis zu seinem am 12. Januar 1814 erfolgten Tode verblieben.
