Description:
London: Punch, 1925. This original printed appearance of a Punch cartoon featuring Winston S. Churchill comes from the personal collection of Gary L. Stiles, author of Churchill in Punch (Unicorn Publishing Group, 2022). His book is the first ever effort to definitively catalog, describe, and contextualize all of the many Punch cartoons featuring Churchill. This cartoon titled "THE OLD LOVE AND THE NEW." appeared thus on p.183 of the 18 February 1925 issue of Punch. The artist is Bernard Partridge. The image is captioned "MR. WINSTON CHURCHILL'S DILEMMA." This cartoon portrays Chancellor of the Exchequer Winston Churchill as torn between competing financial needs. The cartoon is based on a painting by Sir Joshua Reynolds entitled David Garrick Between Tragedy and Comedy. Partridge portrays the age-old battle between how much to spend on the defense budget versus domestic needs. Punch or The London Charivari began featuring Churchill cartoons in 1900, when his political career was just beginning.… Read More

Description:
H.M.S. Duke of York: British Admiralty Press Division, 1944. Photograph. This striking Second World War photograph is remarkable for location, time, subject, and signature. General Bernard Law Montgomery and Admiral Sir Bruce Fraser are captured striding on the deck of the Flagship H.M.S. Duke of York on 6 May 1944, one month before the D-Day Normandy landings. In the background is one of the 14 inch guns that Fraser himself designed. Measuring 10 x 8 inches, the photograph is annotated and signed by Montgomery in black ink in seven lines. At the top center, Montgomery wrote: “Visit to Admiral Sir Bruce Fraser | C-in-C Home Fleet | 6 May 1944.” At the lower right, adjacent to and below his own feet, Montgomery signed and wrote “B. L. Montgomery | General. | C-in-C British Group of Armies.” A final line at the bottom center between Fraser and Montgomery reads: “H.M.S. Duke of York.” There are two British Admiralty stamps on the verso. At the upper right, stamped and bordered in purple… Read More

Boston: Little, Brown and Company, 1944. First edition, only printing. Hardcover. This is a pre-publication publisher's review copy of the U.S. first edition, only printing in collector-worthy condition. Laid in, we were pleased to discover an original Little, Brown & Company review slip. Addressed “To the literary editor:” the slip specifies “This book will be published on:” with an ink-stamped date of “JUL 13 1944”. Three requests are printed: “Do not review before publication date. Send tear sheets or clippings of your review. Do not quote more than 500 words without special permission.” The volume is in near fine condition in a very good dust jacket. The red cloth binding is beautifully bright and clean with sharp corners. We note only trivial wrinkling to the spine ends. The contents are likewise notably clean with no previous ownership marks and no spotting. The dust jacket is neatly price-clipped with light wear to extremities and tiny chip losses to the spine head and corners, but… Read More

London: Cassell and Company, Ltd., 1944. First edition, first printing. Hardcover. This is the British first edition, first printing, of the fourth volume of Prime Minister Winston S. Churchill's war speeches, containing Churchill's speeches from 1943. Condition is very good. Spotting is primarily confined to the first and final leaves and the page edges. A little before mid-year, on 19 May 1943 Churchill gave his second address to the U.S. Congress. Seventeen long months of war had passed since his first, just after Pearl Harbor. London: Williams and Norgate Ltd., 1939. First edition, second printing. Hardcover. This is an exceptionally clean first edition, second printing. This second printing was published in May 1939, the same month as the first printing, and is identical with the sole exception of the print history on the copyright page. Condition is near fine in a near fine dust jacket. The jacket is clean, bright, and complete apart from a neatly price-clipped lower front flap. Trivial wear is confined to hinges and extremities. The jacket is fitted with a clear, removable, archival cover. The volume beneath it suits its jacket. The khaki cloth binding is tight and clean with sharp corners, bright spine gilt, and no appreciable wear apart from a little wrinkling to the spine heel. Description:
New York: Dodd, Mead & Company, 1950s. Here are two original, hand painted and lettered dust jacket design concepts for the American first edition of Churchill's A History of the English-Speaking Peoples by the influential mid-Twentieth Century book jacket designer Philip Grushkin (1921-1998). The designs are executed in gouache, watercolor, ink, and paste-down image on board.  The Volume I design measures 8.5 x 9.5 inches, the Volume II design 8.5 x 7.25 inches.  The design for The Birth of Britain is what we may assume to be an early concept, as the published design shares only the general red and blue colors and banded layout. Grushkin's Volume II design is of particular interest as it features the title Liberty and Sovereignty instead of the published title The New World. The Volume II dust jacket design is otherwise more similar to the published jacket, with the same style lettering and photo of Churchill used in the final design for the first volume. Emended to the spine of Grushkin's design… Read More

Description:
Quebec City: unpublished. Photographic negatives. This is a set of original negatives of apparently unpublished images of President Franklin D. Roosevelt and Prime Minister Winston S. Churchill taken on 18 August 1943 at the Second World War ‘QuadrantÂ’ conference in Quebec City.  Churchill and Roosevelt are prominent in seven of the nine images, pictured variously with Canadian Prime Minister Mackenzie King, Governor General of Canada the Earl of Athlone, Princess Alice, British Foreign Minister Anthony Eden, British Minister of Information Brendan Bracken, and British Permanent Under-Secretary for Foreign Affairs Sir Alexander Cadogan. Particularly compelling are a close shot of Churchill with his cigar smoke trailing across his countenance, of MacKenzie King with his right hand across his forehead as if in amusement or exasperation, of Churchill leaning in toward Princess Alice, of Eden and Roosevelt turned toward one another in conversation, and of just Churchill, Roosevelt, and King, seated… Read More

Stockholm: Copyright A.B. Text & Bilder, published by Svenska Dagbladets, 1941. Photograph. This is an original Second World War press photograph of Prime Minister Winston S. Churchill inspecting an American tank in August 1941. Although the United States did not formally enter the Second World War until December 1941, the Lend-Lease Act of March 1941 greatly increased the flow of material aid to Britain by authorizing the sale, lease, transfer, or exchange of arms and supplies to "any country whose defense the president deems vital to the defense of the United States." Britain proved the primary recipient of such aid, testified by this image. The gelatin silver print on glossy photo paper measures 4.625 x 7.25 inches (11.75 x 18.42 cm). Condition approaches very good, the image bright despite superficial blemishes and scuffs visible under raking light and a single pinhole at each corner.
