Description:
Hardcover with pictorial gilt on front board and gilt lettering on the spine. Full-page color frontispiece with tissue guard. Filled with numerous full-page line drawings and incidental art by Heath Robinson, a titan of early 20th century illustration who's best-known in the UK, where he is also (separately) famous as their version of Rube Goldberg.

Book is solid and square, in all-around very good condition with bright copper gilt and oh no what's this? A buzzkill of a library mark in a small lightened area on the spine, and the dread ka-chunk of a library ink stamp on the ffep and elsewhere. BUT WAIT: Does not have pockets, paste-ons, or any other severe library nonsense.

Does have one pencil inscription by a child telling you what her favorite poem is, and one colored-in line illustration (not a bad job).

Description:
This is, in fact, the first trade edition of The Bells And Other Poems, with 28 color plates by Edmund Dulac, bound from leftover stock by the publisher Hodder and Stoughton, and released under this title during and after the First World War (see below). The endpapers, with bells on them, are also from the 1912 edition. The title page reads, surely enough, The Bells And Other Poems. In point of fact, Hodder and Stoughton were still finding uses for this old stock as late as 1929, when a selection of pages and plates from the book were issued as a Christmas portfolio by the publishing trade magazine, The Bookman. While the date of this edition has been hard to pin down – copies are nearly randomly assigned dates from 1919 to 1925 -- its wartime nature is now established by Adelaide Field, who advances our knowledge by having inscribed the date of November 4, 1918 under her name on the ffep of this copy. That's exactly a week before Armistice Day. So there.

This is a heavy, weighty quarto with an… Read More

Description:
An essential text in the study either of Populism, or populism (small-'p' version) in American political life, listed here in cheap, but nicely vintage paperback form.
Copy is unmarked and unread, and has no significant wear, but shows its age with a general off-white tone, darker on the spine, and that sitting-on-the-shelf look that paperbacks get. Nicely presentable, but not glowing or sparkly.
Almost not worth selling, either, because one of these days, one will probably have to buy another copy.
