Contemporary Dutch vellum gilt prize binding for the Enkhuizen Latin School, smooth spine divided into four panels by gilt double rules, flower head to centre of each panel, covers with double fillet border and large central coat of arms of Enkhuizen. Covers rubbed and a little soiled, small chip to head of front joint, lacks ties. Internally some light browning, small hole in N1 catching the page number, stain to bottom margin of T2 (not affecting text). Complete with frontispiece by G. Schoute, and twenty-seven (including four folding) further engravings by J. Van Vianen, title in red and black. Bound by Meinard Semeins, with his advertisement leaf bound in to rear. Two raised bands to spine, author and title in gilt to central panel, with gilt stems and blind flower heads emanating from bands, gilt roll to board edges, a.e.g., with inlaid morocco doublures of citron morocco forming a frame around four panels of turqoise morocco edged in crimson, the whole inlaid with large daisies of cream, citron, beige and olive morocco, with gilt stems, and signed 'Ch. Meunier 98' in gilt to foot, silk brocade flyleaves, and combed and curled marbled endpapers, original wrappers bound in. Two engraved broadsides - 'A List of His Majesties Royal Navy, Shewing When They Were Built & Rebuilt, their Several Dimensions and Tonnage, with their highest & lowest Compliment of Men ye Number, Nature, Length & Weight of Guns on ye several Decks of Each Rate' and 'The Pay of the Officers & Men in ye Royal Navy, together with the Number in each Rate, and their Daily Allowance of Provisions, and ye Number of Ships', single sided engraved broadsides. Both cropped to margins, with loss to imprint of second mentioned, creased from old folds, browned, with several small chips and tears. Recently rebacked by Temple Bookbinders with original backstrip laid on. Corners bumped, rubbed to extremities. Internally some light foxing, but generally quite bright and clean. Internally occasional light foxing, mainly to engravings, occasionally heavier, but generally quite clean, gift inscription in pen to head of one of the text leaves, Bolingbroke (who should be in volume ten) is in volume eleven. Quarter calf and marbled paper over boards, paper covered corners, smooth back, divided into six panels by gilt roll. Foot of spine slightly chipped, new paper sides. Internally there is a small stain to gutter at head of several pages, but it is fairly unobtrusive. A few pages have a cross in ink to head. The first mentioned is uncommon, with four locations on COPAC, but none with this imprint and none of the same date, the second is well held institutionally, but again none with this imprint or date. The Magdalen Hospital was established in 1758, later renamed Magdalen Hospital for the Reception of Penitent Prostitutes, it provided a refuge and a place where prostitutes could be treated and cared for.
