Stevens, delivered in Congress on May 25, 1858, on the subject of proposed Pacific railroad routes. Stevens not only supported the extension of the rail line, but proposed there be at least three west coast termini. At the time, Stevens was working fervently to promote Washington's territorial interests, publishing his well-known CIRCULAR LETTER TO EMIGRANTS DESIROUS OF LOCATING IN WASHINGTON TERRITORY... the same year. San Antonio: E.O. Goldbeck, National Photo & News Service, [ca. 1930].. Two panoramic photographs, 10 x 48½ inches and 10 x 34½ inches. Minor edge wear and creasing. Very good. An interesting pair of panoramic photographs relating to the Panama Canal Zone around 1930. The photographs were produced by the prolific panoramist E.O. Goldbeck during one of his many jaunts to record American military installations in exotic locales. One is dated June 1930, but it is reasonable to assume Goldbeck photographed both subjects around the same time, since the Panama Canal Zone is no short trip from San Antonio. The pair of panoramas include: 1) CULEBRA CUT - PANAMA CANAL ZONE. 10 x 48½ inches. A well-composed image showing a steamship rounding a corner of the Culebra Cut, an artificial valley cutting through the Continental Divide in Panama and one of the greatest engineering projects of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Circle City, Alaska, and on a steamer between Juneau and Seattle, Nov. 10, 1896; Feb. 17, 1897.. [12]pp. typed on folio sheets of onion-skin paper, plus three hand-drawn maps. A total of some 6,750 words. Stapled at upper edge. Three horizontal folds. Near fine. A very interesting pair of typed letters from a young man in Alaska during the Klondike Gold Rush. The anonymous author wrote these two letters to his parents, describing his journey overland and by water to the Birch Creek mining district, his experiences mining for gold, and his decision to go into business as a merchant. The letters are written in a detailed style that indicates an educated author. They include three manuscript sketches showing the routes traversed in Alaska and provide a great deal of information about the writer's experiences in the Klondike. Lancashire, Englan, 1853. [6]pp. total. Each letter consists of folded sheet, with integral address leaf. Old crease marks, tanned. Overall quite good. Each letter includes an interesting detailed list of goods to be shipped out on the James Cooper to New Orleans, to be forwarded to a Mr. Holditch and a Mr. Brown at Bryant's Station near Cameron, Texas. Among the items listed to be shipped to the settlers are beds, tools, letter paper, rugs, spurs, eyeglasses, a bushel of white Cheshire wheat, clothing, and several books (UNCLE TOM'S CABIN, a farming book, and FLOSS' AUSTRALIA). [N.p., ca. 1855].. Two sixth-plate ambrotypes, each in oval frames measuring 3 1/2 x 3 inches. Minor degradation to the man's image, else very good. Housed together in a thermoplastic Union case. An attractive pair of ambrotypes featuring a married man and woman around the middle of the 19th century. The man sports a Donegal beard and is wearing clerical bands; the woman is decked out in a flowing dress with large sleeves.

[Detroit: Detroit Publishing Company, 1915. Ten colored photographic views, each 3 1/2 x 5 1/2 inches, tipped onto blank leaves. Bound into original oblong 12mo. paper portfolio, string-tied. Portfolio wrappers with some chipping and edgewear. Internally neat and clean. Very good. Scarce set of colored photographic views of buildings featured at the Panama Pacific Exposition, which was held in San Francisco in 1915 to celebrate the completion of the Panama Canal. Includes shots of the Avenue of Palms; Tower of Jewels (day and night views); Court of the Universe; Palace of Fine Arts; Palace of Horticulture; and more. The Detroit Publishing Company obtained the exclusive rights to use the Swiss "Photochrom" process for converting black-and- white photographs into color images and printing them by photolithography. This process permitted the mass production of color postcards, prints, and albums for sale to the American market.

An important and very rare American view book, showing scenes in and around Philadelphia, primarily notable public works and major public buildings, ranging from the University of Pennsylvania to the Eastern Penitentiary, U.S. Mint, Naval Asylum, U.S. Bank, Merchants' Exchange, and more. This issue also includes four additional plates, being north, south, east, and west views from City Hall, forming a panorama. A striking panoramic photograph picturing the Japanese-American celebrants at the 40th anniversary of the opening of the Buddhist school at the Los Angeles branch of the Higashi Honganji Temple. The photograph is titled and dated in Japanese script; it relates the date of the celebration as the 13th, 14th, and 15th of September in the year 2600 (after the birth of the Emperor Jimmu), which is 1940. The photograph pictures a few hundred Issei and Nissei men, women, and children in a mixture of traditional Japanese gowns and caps, and western suits and dresses. There are a few banners in the background relating to the temple and the celebration. The Higashi Honganji Buddhist Temple is still active in Los Angeles. Long hook-shaped closed vertical tear at middle of image. Good. A sobering panoramic photograph featuring the attendees of a Japanese-American funeral in the mid-20th century. The image features about a hundred finely-dressed Japanese Americans ranged around a flower-covered coffin at center. Elderly attendees sit in the pews of what appears to be a Buddhist Temple. Interestingly, those standing at the altar all appear to be Japanese-American, while the majority of those sitting in the pews appear to be Caucasian. Unfortunately, the photograph is not titled and does not reveal a photographer's credit, leaving the ultimate identity of the attendees and the location of the funeral unknown.

Minor bumping, creasing, and some spotting along the right edge including a short closed repaired tear, a few creases, a tiny hole in the grass portion of the image area, light soiling at left edge. Overall very good condition. An early and substantial panoramic photograph depicting hundreds of Japanese Americans celebrating the completion of the Salinas Buddhist Church assembly hall and the installation of the Buddha on November 27-28, 1926. The Salinas Buddhist Church was founded on California Street in 1925 by Issei and Nissei worshippers and the construction was completed on the day this photograph was taken. The opening of the temple was preceded by the Ochigo parade and this image likely pictures the participants in that parade, as many of the children are wearing stylized costumes.
