Personal Exposures / Elliot Erwitt
W.W. Norton, New York, 1988. First edition. Large square hardcover with 248 duotone photographs.
"Seeing what few others see, and capturing it for all of us, is the essence of Personal Exposures. For this volume Elliott painstakingly culled the work of a lifetime, rediscovering prints he had not seen in years and creating a unified whole that reflects a consistent, mature vision of photography and humanity. Here are men, women, and children in off-guard moments; old people; little girls hamming it up; and even various dogs, who have their own preoccupations. The pictures reflect a lifetime of humorous, ironic observation and sensitivity to the human condition."
Condition: The book is nearly as new, in the dust-jacket. A very faint sign of some dampness affects only the first blank page or two.
Elliott Erwitt (1928 – November 29) was a French-born American advertising and documentary photographer known for his black and white candid photos of ironic and absurd… Read More

The character was based on Charlestonian Samuel Smalls. In some of the novel's passages, black characters speak in Gullah, a creole language that had developed among enslaved African Americans during the slavery years on the Sea Islands. The novel was adapted for a 1927 play of the same name by Heyward and his wife, playwright Dorothy Heyward. Even before completing the play, Heyward was in discussions with composer George Gershwin for an operatic version of his novel. This was produced in 1935 as Porgy and Bess.
