Pagany was a literary journal that ran for a short time (12 issues). This vol. includes pieces by Erskine Caldwell, Gertrude Stein, William Carlos Williams, Ezra Pound. Also artwork by Virgil Thomson and Margaret Leighton. Little known but made its mark in literary history. Condition is good. Binding is tight, paper cover only slightly soiled and darkened at very top. Original subscription price was $2/hr or 50c a copy!

Very nice, clean and tight copy of Gertrude Stein's Paris France, The American edition did not include the 8 original illustrations but all the text of the French first edition. It's a "great little book" about France and the French people. When this book first appeared (on the day Paris fell to the Germans), it was hailed for its celebration of the "unconquerable French spirit." With illustrated dust jacket, including flaps and original price of $1.75.

Facing pages have the poem and a picture of then-contemporary Paris, successfully capturing the feel and sense of that wonderful city. Poems range from the 1400s to early 20th Century, and include those by Villon, Marot, Boursault, Racine, Voltaire, Hugo, Musset, Baudelaire, Rimbaud, Giraudoux, Cocteau, Apollinaire, Eluard, Aragon, and Roy. Photographs are of the Sorbonne, Pont-Neuf, Notre-Dame, Tuileries, Seine, Invalides, Pont-Neuf, Pantheon, Tuileries, Bateau-mouche, and many more (153 photographs). Binding is a rough cloth, stamped with black scene of Notre-Dame and red stamping for book title. Inside, coated bright white pages show off the photos beautifully. A handsome book.

A story by noted children's author Edward Fenton, illustrated by Edward Gorey. Condition: book is very good, with no marks or soiling. Front endpaper has price stamp of $1, otherwise very clean. Yellow cloth binding has minor darkening at top edge but otherwise very good. Dust jacket is lightly soiled but otherwise strong. Front flap has original price. This is stated first edition.

This exhibition catalog explains the rationale for an exhibit at the Yale University Art Gallery and at the Baltimore Museum of Art to display the objectives and tastes of Gertrude Stein as an art collector and writer on art and artists. With a foreword discussing the Yale collection and a consideration of the topic using quotes from Stein to prove her points. Also a catalogue for the exhibit, which included works by Christian Berard, Eugene Berman, Georges Braque, Paul Cezanne, Jo Davidson, Delacroix, Juan Gris, Marsden Hartley, Jacques Lipchitz, Henri Matisse, Elie Nadelman, Pablo Picasso, and others. With black and white illustrations.

This drama by poet Robert Browning is a mix of poetry and prose, first published in 1841 as the first of a series in his Bells and Pomegranates series, then republished in 1849. This later edition is enhanced with illustrations by L. Leslie Brooke. Brooke was a leading oil painter and book illustrator of the time. The drama initially caused controversy because of its portrayal of "disreputable characters" but gained popularity and was described as "perhaps the most beautiful of Browning's dramas.
Condition is very good, in that binding is clean, stamping bright, spine good, and text without markings. Some of the engravings have tissue protections. All are clear and unmarked. Front endpaper has faint writing of prior owner's name. Endpapers and some pages have light foxing.

This tiny book is a gem, with discussion of the printer's marks in the collection of the Morgan Library. Includes a center piece showing 16 well-known printers' marks from the 15th to 20th centuries. Condition: like new.

Famous writer and editor Margaret Anderson compiled this journal, with pieces by outstanding writers of the time, including Djuna Barnes, Hohn Hollander, James Merrill, Glenway Wescott, Charles Wuorinen. Condition is very good, with only some pencil markings the the Wuorinen piece. Very light soiling on the covers, otherwise all is very good.

This heavily illustrated, lush presentation of the second and third parts of Dante's Divine Comedy (Inferno being the first) has illustrations and designl by M. Gustave Dore. Translation by Rev. Henry Francis Cary, with accompanying notes. There are 60 illustrations. Page edges are gilt. Condition: Front board has some damage to the art--looks like wear. The edges of the boards are worn, with small tears. Binding is tight and very good except for front endpapers, which are loose and have prior owner's name, and with inscription as gift from brothers, June 5/1889. Otherwise, no marks, with overall very good condition.
