Hinge and text block firm neat inked inscription to the front end paper. Pages lightly tanned but smooth and clean. This is a nice copy.

Edinburgh: John Wood, 1765. Hardcover. Good/No Jacket. 12mo - over 6¾ - 7¾" tall. ..A new edition to which is added, Historical, Philosophical, and Explanatory notes, Translated from the French of The Learned Raymond de St. Maur...". Two volume set in the original brown leather bindings with 5 raised bands along spines, gilt decorations and volume numbers in compartments, gilt title on leather title plate on Volume 1, this leather title plate missing from volume 2 but imprint of title just visible. The leather shows rubbing, especially along edges, but remain robust and attractive. Hinges firm, though rear end paper of both volumes very nearly detatched, and front free end papers missing. Contemporaneous inscription inside the front of each book. Pages have blotchy browning throughout, but otherwise smooth and legible. Overall a very well preserved set.

At the rear is printed "The letterpress and line illustrations lithographed by Vincent Brooks, Day and Sons Ltd. London, the four-colour plates printed by Henry Stone and son Ltd. Banbury A.D. MCMXII". Soft limp brown leather binding, with a gilt and black emblem and title on the front and titles in gilt along the spine. The top board is detached. The spine strip is tattered at both ends, particularly at the top, and the flimsy leather edges are also worn. Internally the pages are remarkably well preserved. First few pages are attached but only just. Illustrated end papers though obviously split at the front where the front of the binding is detached. Stiff card pages, smooth and clean, illustrated and illuminated with several beautiful tipped in coloured plates. May incur additional postage charges overseas.
