Helena, 1897. Good plus.. 506,[2]pp. Thick octavo. Original cloth, spine gilt, board's printed. Spine ends a bit chipped, corners worn, hinges cracked and a bit loose. A couple of tape repairs, light toning and dust soiling. The eighth city directory for Helena, Montana, published by the prolific firm of R.L. Polk & Co. Contains an alphabetical listing of residents (including addresses, occupations, and occasional indications of "col'd" individuals) and businesses, followed by a classified directory of businesses only, organized by type. With a sixteen-page section of advertisements at the front and additional leaves of ads scattered throughout.

Aberdeen: S.W. Narregang, 1894. Very good.. Broadside, 10.5 x 5 inches. Old fold lines, minor wear. Broadside advertising real estate investment in the fertile farm country of Brown County, South Dakota as offered for sale by S.W. Narregang. In addition to having over a million acres of the finest farm land, Brown County has "5 roller flour mills, 26 post offices, 19 thrifty growing towns, 200 miles of operated railroads, 165 school houses, 17,000 population, 50 grain elevators." Narregang is offering 50,000 acres for sale priced $5 to $10 an acre at low interest. Brown County is located in the northeastern part of the state, on the border with North Dakota. We locate a single copy in OCLC, at Southern Methodist University.

Lincoln, 1906. Very good.. 68pp. plus frontispiece and errata. 12mo. Original grey printed wrappers. Light soiling and wear. Small ink stamp on verso of first leaf. Internally clean. Temperance poetry written by a doctor in Nebraska. In one piece, titled "Our Bondage: Written on Nebraska's Senate Refusing the County Option Bill," he writes: "King George once swayed his scepter here, / And ruled us with an iron hand... / King Alcohol now holds high sway, / And seeks to rule this land of ours-- / And in our legislative halls / He shows his great corrupting powers...." The copyright page advertises the author's address to apply for copies of the work, bound in cloth or wrappers. We locate three copies in OCLC, at the Huntington, Kansas City Public Library, and the Lincoln Public Library.

[Guatemala, 1850. Very good plus.. 12pp. Folio, stitched as issued. A couple of very minor chips along lower edge. Light dust soiling and minor foxing. A scarce treaty of friendship and trade between Guatemala and the free, northern German cities of Bremen, Hamburg, and Lubeck, former leading members of the medieval Hanseatic League, and in the mid-19th century, members of the loose German Confederation. The agreement, dated June 7, 1850, is quite extensive, and printed in two columns in both Spanish and German. Although Rafael Carranza is here hailed as the President of the Guatemalan Republic, he had only returned from exile the previous year, and was in the midst of fighting not only the liberal Guatemalan faction that had deposed him, but also the forces of Honduras and El Salvador, in order to re-establish his power. Los Angeles, 1936. Good plus.. Eleven issues, each 8pp. Large newspaper folio. Folded, with some wear and minor loss along fold lines. Light chipping at edges. Somewhat browned, more heavily along folds and at edges. Rafu Shimpo, the Los Angeles Japanese Daily News, is one of the oldest Japanese language newspapers in the United States and also the longest running -- founded in 1903, it continues to be published today. The paper initially was published in Japanese only, but in 1926 began to print a page of news in English in order to cater to second generation Japanese Americans. This scarce group of eleven issues published in October 1936 seems to have been collected by Haruki Takashi, whose articles on Pan-Asianism appear throughout this run of the newspaper. Cincinnati, 1856. Very good.. Five issues and supplements, totaling [72]pp. Spines reinforced. Light tanning and dust soiling; scattered, faint foxing. A lengthy extra issue of the Railroad Record, with four additional eight-page supplements, that together comprise a ringing endorsement from this industry periodical and its editors of the southern route through Texas and the Southwest for the American transcontinental railroad. The first two items of this extra, published on October 4, 1855, are by Texas Western Railroad owner and promoter Edgar Conkling, who exhorts readers to examine the evidence supporting construction along the southern route and to invest in his railroad, which was already sanctioned by the Texas state legislature, as the text of two laws printed following his address demonstrate. Five loose issues of this railroad periodical, containing relevant articles as well as a plethora of advertisements for related sundries and industries. Issues here range from January to August. Content includes articles on steam boiler experiments, railroad stocks, sugar production and consumption, the physical geography of America, and more. Notably, the issue for January 10 includes a report from the Secretary of War's on the Pacific Railroad, giving the project a favorable review. Ads include Hall's Patent Concrete Fire Proof Safe, Lee & Leavitt's Steel Works, Lane & Bodley's Power Mortising Machine, and many many more. A wonderful snapshot of the industrial era in the mid-19th century.

[Olympia: Washington Railroad Commission], 1910. Very good plus.. Large folding map, 34 x 47.5 inches, folded to 8 x 5 inches. Original printed card covers. Covers with slight loss, minor wear. Minor wear to map, minor separation at a few corners. Large and detailed map of Washington state, delineating thirty different railroads across the state, including electric and projected lines, as well as logging railroads. The Washington Railroad Commission was first formed in 1905. Comprised of three persons, the Commission was tasked with inspection, safety, and some regulation of rates, as well as investigation into complaints of misconduct. It produced three maps, in 1908, 1910, and 1911, reflecting the swiftly-evolving landscape of transportation in the state. The following year, the Commission was redesignated as the Washington Public Service Commission, and its jurisdictional role expanded to encompass electric, gas, telephone, and more. Des Moines: Kenyon Company, Inc, 1922. About very good.. Large folding map, color printed, 27 x 51.5 inches. Original printed wrappers. Minor wear to wraps. One separation along fold from top edge extending into map area. Light tanning. A scarce, attractive, and huge color map of the railroad system in Oklahoma during the early 1920s. The map depicts the paths of thirty-three steam and electric railroad lines across the state, with an inset legend listing each and containing illustrations of a gushing oil well and a passenger train with a group of customers gathered on the rear porch of the caboose. The lines of large steam railroad companies are delineated in various colors, with each stop identified, and the distances between each station marked. The map is also quite interesting for its inclusion of electric train lines, which were growing out of larger population centers such as Oklahoma City, Tulsa, Muskogee, and McAlester at this time. [Chicago]: Rand McNally & Co, 1922. Very good.. Folding map, 26.75 x 34 inches, folded to 7.5 x 4 inches. Light wear and soiling to covers, a few minor tears to edges of map. Clean and fresh. Rare map of Rand McNally's District 12, comprising Kansas, southern Nebraska, northern Oklahoma, most of Colorado, and bits of Wyoming, Texas, New Mexico, and Missouri. The map spans the center of the country from Aspen to Kansas City, and from Omaha to Albuquerque. While the map is printed in blue, state borders are printed in red, as are hotels and points of interest. In a card cover indicating that this map is courtesy of People's Trust Company of Kansas City, Missouri. OCLC locates two copies each of 1921 and 1923 (Newberry with both; History Colorado and University of Alabama), but no copies of this 1922 edition.

Scarce alternate issue of this first Rand McNally pocket map of British Columbia. The main area of the map depicts the lower two-thirds of the province, with geological features shaded and districts outlined in red. An inset at upper right shows the upper portion of the province that neighbors Alaska. Nine railroads in the Vancouver and Victoria area are delineated in black and numbered in red, with a key printed in red at lower right. El Paso, Tx, 1914. About very good.. x,120pp., including a photographic portrait of the authors. Small quarto. Original printed wrappers. Spine perishing; small, personal shelf label at foot of spine. Light dampstaining and minor chipping to wraps. Text somewhat browned, but not brittle. Final gathering bound in upside-down. A fabulously scathing attack on Mexican revolutionary and eventual president, Venustiano Carranza, and his supporters, the "rats and mice," published in El Paso, Texas, in 1914. After Victoriano Huerta overthrew and assassinated Francisco Madero in 1913, Carranza declared himself in rebellion against the new government and established himself as the Primer Jefe of the Constitutionalist Army still in the field. He was not as radical as many of his compatriots, particularly in terms of social and land reform, and was often vilified, as here, for a lack of commitment to full revolution. Pasadena: Trail's End Publishing Co. Inc, 1948. About very good.. [64]pp., including illustrations. Small quarto. Original calf, gilt stamped and lettered. Light wear at edges, small dampstains at head and foot of spine. Internally clean. Scarce limited edition of this collection of ribald vignettes favored by Western artist Charles Russell; this is #116 of 300 printed. Each anecdote is accompanied by a reproduction of work by Russell and other Western artists. The verso of the title-page reads, "Not Copyrighted 1948. Why should we give the Library of Congress two copies of this book? Anyone is welcome to tell these stories as his own." According to Adams, it "could not be sent through the mails when it was published." An appealing and amusing little volume, hand numbered on the final leaf and with Russell's personal stamp in gilt on the rear board. Adams, Herd 1974.

Pueblo de Mixco: Don Antonio Sanchez Cubillas, 1774. Still very good.. [2],12pp. Small folio. Modern decorated paper boards; manuscript paper label on front cover. Title page repaired along gutter margin. Minor dust soiling. A historical account of devastating earthquakes in Guatemala from 1541 to 1773. In the last quarter of that year, the Santa Marta earthquakes struck Antigua Guatemala, the original capital of the Spanish colony, destroying the city and killing hundreds. The disaster directly resulted in the transfer of the capital twenty miles to the east to what is today Guatemala City. It is no wonder that the seat of government was moved after a perusal of this text, which catalogues and describes twenty-one earthquakes, twelve of which resulted in significant or total destruction of the town. The present account was printed at Mixco, now on the western outskirts of Guatemala City, during meetings of the colonial government to locate and plan the new capital. Morton's speech on Reconstruction and the prospect of African American voting rights, delivered at a Republican Mass Meeting in Richmond, Indiana on September 29, 1865. The work was also published in a 24pp. pamphlet entitled Reconstruction and Negro Suffrage, which is a scarce work in its own right. Morton's speech covers a myriad of topics and angles with regard to Reconstruction and "negro suffrage," illustrated by the section titles within the speech. Chicago: Pettibone, Wells & Co, 1886. Very good.. 32pp., including three illustrations, plus double-sided folding map, 14 x 13.75 inches. Original red textured wrappers printed in gold, stapled. Some minor wear, light chipping to lower corner of rear cover. Internally clean. Promotional pamphlet advertising mortgages sold by the Dakota Loan and Trust Company. The first half is devoted to information about the company, its glowing reputation, and excellent rates. The second half provides information about Dakota and reasons for desiring to settle there, including excellent schools, burgeoning railroad development, and a healthful climate. The three illustrations show industrious and prosperous farmers at work. The map in the back is entitled "Map of South Dakota and Northern Nebraska Showing Territory Occupied by Dakota Loan and Trust Company", while on the verso is a "Map of the Northern States" which depicts the upper Midwest. We locate two copies in OCLC, at Yale and Trinity College.

[Various places in Texas, 1920. About very good.. Twenty-seven real photo postcards, of which fifteen filled out in manuscript and mailed. Minor wear, light dust soiling and staining. A neat collection of just under thirty real photo postcards of Texas scenes, most showing military or oil business scenes. Approximately half are filled out by a man named George and addressed to a female acquaintance or relative in Woodbine, Iowa, from 1918 to 1920. George seems to have been in the military, as several of the completed postcards are written from Ft. Ringgold in Rio Grande City, Ft. Sam Houston, and Wichita Falls. The locales depicted in the cards correspond to the regions surrounding these base points, and include images of Burkburnett, Ranger, Breckenridge, Mission, McAllen, Brownsville, and several other towns. The cards showing the oil fields of North Texas, and related operations and infrastructure are quite striking.

Sepia-toned photograph, 13.25 x 10.25 inches, mounted on textured backing measuring 20 x 16 inches, typed label at bottom left, reading "85 - 'Reborn' Robert C. Barndt, Jr. Tribune-Democrat." Minor surface wear to photo, light soiling to mount. A wonderful large-format photograph picturing two African American religious officials baptizing an African American woman in an unnamed river, taken by noted Pennsylvania newspaper photographer Robert C. Barndt, Jr. Barndt was born and raised in Pennsylvania. Upon graduating high school in Conemaugh Township in 1946, Barndt spent twenty-three years as the news photographer for the Johnstown Tribune Democrat. In 1969, Barndt quit the paper and transferred his photography skills to retail camera sales for the remainder of his career in Pennsylvania and Arizona. Scarce work addressing the anti-slavery work of George Thompson following his visit to America. Thompson (1804-1878) was British lecturer and reformer who worked as a commercial clerk. "Thompson first came to prominence in 1831, when he was recruited by the London Anti-Slavery Society's Agency Committee as an itinerant lecturer. In the run up to the Emancipation Act of 1833 he became the most effective British anti-slavery lecturer since Thomas Clarkson.... With the struggle against British slavery apparently won, Thompson was instrumental in reorienting anti-slavery effort towards the Americas and particularly the United States. ... [Mexico, 1870. About very good.. 49,[1],9,[1]pp. Quarto. Self-wrappers. Contents lightly soiled. In a legible hand. Handsome handmade manuscript cook book, likely from Mexico. Written in a neat and tidy hand, with paper dated by watermark, this volume appears to have seen actual use in the kitchen, based on some of its soiling. The opening recipe is for Bistec, followed by Vaca Mechada. There are several recipes on themes for cooking partridge, as well as those for varieties of rice, stews, eggs, and sausages. The last ten pages contain an index, as well as several more recipes.
