Rare first edition of this work on Parisian prostitution, attributed to the writer and journalist Émile Marco de Sainte-Hilaire (1796–1887). The Réclamation
is presented as a letter from the prostitute Modeste Agnès to the newly-appointed Paris chief of police, Guy Delavau (1787–1874), protesting attempts by retailers to exclude prostitutes from the Palais-Royal over the forthcoming Christmas and New Year holidays.
Modeste Agnès argues that she and her colleagues have as much right to do business in the Palais-Royal as anyone else, and that they pay for the right to ply their trade. Furthermore, they attract locals, provincials, and foreigners to the area to the benefit of the local economy, since their clients spend money in cafes, and on clothes and jewellery. First edition of this collection of chronicles, covering sixteen hundred years of world history from the birth of Christ to its publication, composed by the ecclesiastical historian Aubert le Mire of Brussels, this copy from the library of Jacques Auguste de Thou.
The volume opens with Eusebius of Caesarea's chronicle to the year 329 AD, with St Jerome's supplement to 381. This is followed by Sigebert of Gembloux's medieval Chronicon covering the period between 381 and 1112, with additions up to the year 1225 by Anselm of Gembloux and others. The final part comprises Le Mire's own chronicle ('ex vetustis scriptoribus') from 1200 to 1608, ending with an index directing the reader to passages relating to, for example, Jerusalem and Rhodes, numerous emperors, kings and popes, religious and military orders, plagues and earthquakes, and the invention of printing, which is discussed at length under the year 1440. For this more compact English edition the publisher and early photographic entrepreneur Joseph Cundall made an early use of photography: 'The present illustrations have been reduced from the originals, which are much larger, by the agency of the daguerreotype, and I hope that the expression of every line has been most faithfully preserved'. First edition, rare especially as complete with both parts as here, of the first Roman Missal in Croatian, an important association copy from the library of a Prefect of Studies of the Propaganda Fide. The Missal is printed in Shtokavian (or Å tokavian), the prestige dialect of the pluricentric Serbo-Croatian language and the basis of its Serbian, Croatian, Bosnian and Montenegrin standards. The Missal is adorned with many woodcuts and includes musical notation.
As well as publishing the first such translation of the Missal, Jesuit Bartol KaÅ¡ić (Bartholomaeus Cassius, 1575–1650) published the first Croatian/Illyrian grammar and produced (but did not published) a translation of the Bible.
