Book has offsetting to paste downs and end papers, two light spots on front board, light edge wear and with previous owners first name - Lloyd - printed in ink at top corner of front end paper. Jacket has edge wear with chipping and slight losses along edges, mildly sunned spine, a clip and a crease to front flap, and also old internal tape reinforcements. Looks better than it sounds. This title was made into a movie with Suzanne Pleshette and Ben Gazzara, and is often advertised as - signed - because of the author’s facsimile signature on the title page.

From World War II, a magazine size issue of the RESTRICTED journal for May, 1944, in Near Fine, stapled wraps approximately 13 by 9 inches with 50 pp. This copy has only mild aging, slight wear to pages, and an officer’s name and unit stamped in small light letters to the front cover. These journals were used to train members of the services to recognize planes, ships, and various ground vehicles, such as tanks, and are filled with B/W photos of these (for the Allies, German, and Japanese).  There are detailed legends with the photos, as well several short articles. There are a number of quizzes with answers in each issue. Release of an issue or revelation of its contents to unauthorized persons was prohibited by law (Espionage Act, 50, as amended).

Fiction set in Baltimore that morphs into a crime novel toward the end. Published to excellent reviews but didn’t sell; won the Penn west prize; recently re-issued as a trade paperback. Ward was lured off to Hollywood and wrote for TV (Hill Street Bills) and movies. Book was remaindered by Dial but got Ward a cult following. Signed by Ward on title page and dated 4.12.85.
