Contemporary calf, Eton Prize binding by Riviere, marbled endpapers, bordered with gilt rolls, gilt fleurons to corners, raised bands, spine gilt, a.e.g. Joints and boards a trifle rubbed. Eton Prize book plate from the headmaster E.C. Hawtrey to E[dward?] Howman (1847). Handsome edition by the Chiswick Press, on thick high-quality paper, lavishly bound by Riviere - an Eton College book prize. It was printed by William Pickering's business partner Charles Whittingham II at his Chiswick Press. This copy was presented to a student by Eton's great modernising headmaster, the literary scholar Edward Craven Hawtrey (1789-1862).

Outer edges uncut. A bit worn, boards a little grubby, corners bumped, ffep browned and edges a little foxed and dusted, but binding sound: still a nice copy. With 24 illustrations by the author.

A trifle soiled. Early bibliographical note to ffep; autograph of Johann Augustin Groebel to title; illegible modern library stamp to p.85. A scarce Greek-Latin edition, unrecorded in major bibliographies, of Theognis of Megara's (6th century B.C.) gnomic and elegiac poetry. Its moralising tone ensured its continuous transmission throughout late antiquity and the middle ages. It was edited by Heinrich Gottlob Just, professor of Greek at Erfurt.
