Veuillot was a French Ultramontane (one who puts the authority of the Pope above all secular authority in all matters) and wrote much in support of the Papacy, and particularly criticizing more Liberal Catholics of the time. His work for the Papacy was recognised by Pius IX, the subject of this work. There is a touch of darkening to the paper covers. Otherwise, a clean and tidy copy, inside and out. Shanghai, Hong Kong, Singapore & Yokohama: Kelly and Walsh Limited, 1904. First edition, printed in 1904, of this important early guide book. With numerous photos and period advertisements. It was the first city guide on Shanghai published in a foreign language, and - at the time - was a very useful source of information about Shanghai, though mostly focussed on the foreign settlements. Black ink mark to front cover. Light wear to spine ends but tight and clean copy. The inside is clean and in a very good condition. Lacks the original map to the back pocket. [x], xx, 221, [xxiv] pp. A fascinating insight in to China at that time - with everything from guidance on the price of hiring a sampan or a rickshaw, to 'handy' phrases in Pidgin-English! It represents a certain view of the city; through the eyes of a Western resident in the early 20th century.

Frontis portrait of Hannah More. Vignette to the title page. Religious moral tales for children. The leather is a little dulled but without chips or tears. A touch of handling to the edges of the boards. Internally very clean and strong. There are a couple of different owner's signatures to the end papers. Nice clean impression to the frontis and text throughout. 200 pages.

Mainly clean pink paper, with a little nicking to the edges and slight marking. Internally clean and tidy, with a touch of darkening. A little rusting to the staples. 16 pages. COPAC cites only the BL copy of this work. Sheila Agnes Turk was the pseudonym of Sarah Ann Agnes Turk (1859–1927). A Catholic writer, buried in Nottingham Cemetery.

Speckled calf, with attractive blind stamped design to the front and rear board. 20th C. owner's bookplate to the front paste down. early owner's signature to the front end paper. Half title, contents to the rear. The author outlines a moderate vindication for the Church of England priesthood. Sections on avoiding the perils of Popery, Presbyterianism and Islam (or the "Mahometan impostures" as he calls them). The book opens with the sentiment. "An infidel in the Church, may very aptly be compared to a Monkey in a Glass-Shop" The boards are still clean and attractive. There is a little bumping to the edges, but not too much. Slight darkening to the front cover.. A thin volume, not bound up (as issued) Titles and monogram of the institute to the front cover. Sewn. The list of patrons and the committee, led by the Earl of Shrewsbury, includes Lord Clifford as one of the (many) Vice Presidents. The Catholic Institute grew out of the Metropolitan Catholic Tract Society. The organisation was formed "To protect the rights of Conscience of the Poorer classes of Catholics and to promote the interests of Religion and charity." Irish M.P. Daniel O'Connell was also involved in the establishment of the Institute. Led initially by the Hon. Charles Langdale M.P.

Cream boards with quarter Niger leather spine and gilt titles by Sangorski & Sutcliffe. The black leather is in excellent condition, but the cream boards are a little rubbed on the corners, and slightly soiled. Still attractive though. The end papers have stains where tape has been used (it seems to hold a previous cover). Otherwise the book is in very good clean condition. #458 / 1000 copies. Printed on Arnold's mould made paper. The dedication of this edition is to Robert Walpole. He was de facto the first British Prime Minister from 1721.
