z.p., z.n., (16XX). Fraai schilderij uit de 17e eeuw in de originele houten lijst, niet gesigneerd of gedateerd. Betreffende het oordeel van de wijze koning Salomo over de twee vrouwen die om een kind twistten, in 1 Koningen 3:16-28. Het werk is geschilderd op een rechthoekig doek met olieverf. De totale afmeting inclusief lijst is 132 x 99 cm., het schilderij zelf is 105 x 75 cm. Het schilderij is gerestaureerd, schoongemaakt en opnieuw in de originele lijst geplaatst.

Decorative marbled calf with rich spine gilt and gilt cover border of a wide fillet and several individual stamps, as well as gilt edges and handsome colored paper endpapers. Front cover with gold-stamped owner's monogram ""I.M."" and date ""1802"" in oval wreath. In original leather slipcase with colored paper lining. Beautiful prayer book printed and illustrated in a generous type in a particularly beautiful binding. The style exemplifies the transition from Rococo to Classicism. The book block is very clean, spine at the top with a small lack, the cover centers minimally rubbed, the slipcase slightly rubbed, and one edge with a small chipping. Overall very good condition.

Amsterdam, Paulus Aertsz van Ravensteyn, 1633. (12) 568 (12) p. Origineel Perkament, 4° (Plaatselijk, met name in het voorwerk wat vochtvlekkig.) Verdediging van de Heidelbergse Catechismus tegen de aanval van de Dominicaan J.A. Coppenstein in zijn werk 'Invicta Veritas' door de gereformeerde predikant Jacobus Laurentius, 1585-1644. Laurentius was een fel bestrijder van de Roomse leer, in dit werk zet hij de verschillende leerpunten tussen de Gereformeerde en Roomse leer tegenover elkaar met de Heidelbergse Catechismus als leiddraad. De laatste gemeente waar hij stond was Amsterdam, zijn dochter Debora werd de overgrootmoeder van Willem Bilderdijk. Vooral is Laurentius bekend geworden omdat hij Hugo de Groot Roomse sympathieën toeschreef in zijn werk: ""Hugo Grotius papizans"", in 1830 verzorgde H.F. Kohlbrugge nog een nieuwe uitgave hiervan.

Henricus Alting, 1583-1644, was afgevaardigde naar de Synode van Dordrecht van 1618-1619 namens de Keurvorst van de Palts, en werd benoemd tot revisor van het Nieuwe Testament. Hij woonde in Heidelberg toen de stad in 1622 met bruut geweld werd ingenomen door de Spanjaarden onder leiding van Graaf Tilly. Thuis kwam hij een vijandelijke officier tegen die zei:""Met deze hand heb ik heden tien mensen gedood, als ik wist waar hij schuilde, zou Alting hem spoedig volgen. En wie bent U?"" Alting antwoordde dat hij onderwijzer aan het Collegium Sapientiae was geweest, maar gaf zijn naam niet en ontsnapte. Na enige omzwervingen, in 1624 stond hij in Leiden aan de universiteit ingeschreven, kwam Henricus Alting in Groningen, waar hij in 1627 een professoraat in de theologie verkreeg. Amsterdam, Johannes Covens & Cornelis Mortier, 1740. The first wall map of the Seven Provinces of 1651, re-issued as 'Stoel des Oorlogs' by Covens & Mortier. Size 136,5 x 172 cm. The first issue of the present wall-map is known to be included in the Klencke Atlas in the British Library; the second edition, by son Dancker Danckerts, is present in the other two giant atlases: the Mecklenburg Atlas in Rostock and the Atlas des Grossen Kurfürsten in Berlin. After Nicolaas Visscher published a third state of this decorative piece it was the firm of Covens & Mortier who sold this fourth and final state of the map. Presumably commemorating the 1648 treaty and the Republic's independence, this map might be considered to be a peace-counterpart of the monumental 21-sheet world map that was published by Joan Blaeu in 1648.
