Includes a large (58 x 44.4 cm) colour folding poster of Byron tucked inside. From the website (rendered in automatic translation from the Greek): 'In the book "Lord of Byron" we honour those who with their yataghan, through rivers of blood and tears, brought freedom to our homeland enslaved by the Turks. Each volume is wonderfully illustrated and in each book there is a large poster of the hero. This series is a valuable aid for students'. Part of a series on the heroes of the Greek Revolution.

Rather worn at folds, dusty and with some soilings. Centres on the junction of Streatham Place, Streatham Hill and Christchurch Road. Shows the reservoir of the Lambeth Waterworks Company opposite the Royal Asylum of St. Anne's Society. A few notes of ground rents added in contemporary red manuscript.

Hand-coloured folding engraved map (overall 104.5 x 72 cm.) backed onto brown cloth, dissected into 36 panels and folded into original cloth backed yellow printed paper covered card covers, and with original tie (partly perished). 20 inset canal plans. Covers a little soiled and worn, map very good.

[London: Printed for J. Johnson, St. Paul's Churchyard, by I. Gold, Shoe Lane, 1804].. Original hand-coloured engraving (23.5 x 14.5 cm) from the first British edition of Elements of Botany: Or, Outlines of the Natural History of Vegetables. The first edition, printed for the author in Philadelphia in the previous year, is the first botanical textbook to have been published in America. Benjamin Smith Barton (1766-1815) was an American botanist, naturalist, and physician. He was one of the first professors of natural history in the United States and built the largest collection of botanical specimens in the country. He wrote the first American textbook on botany.

London: John Murray, 1831.. Original hand-coloured engraving (25 x 15.75 cm). William Jackson Hooker (1785-1865), Regius Professor of Botany at the University of Glasgow, was appointed the first full-time director of the Royal Gardens at Kew in 1841. Over the course of his long tenure, which ended at his death in 1865, he helped develop and create the modern Royal Gardens at Kew.

Figures: 1: Ceylon Snake; 2-3: Squamata; 7: American snake; 8: African snake. A very good example. Seba, the son of a Frisian peasant, was an apothecary who became rich in the service of the Dutch East India Company. Described as a 'prototypical collector' of natural curiosities and exotic species, his collections ranged from the beautiful to the obscure, including birds, reptiles, lizards and snakes, butterflies and other insects, shells and exotic sea life, unusual mammals such as bats and anteaters, as well as exotic plants. His collection also included some fantasy animals, intended to attract attention and interest, such as a seven-headed hydra.

Headpiece and alternative title on verso of left page, showing through to recto. Text on verso of right page. Heavily browned overall with some soiling to margins. Horizontal crease just to right of centrefold.
