Description:
Canberra, ACT ; [Melbourne] : National Library of Australia Publishing in Association with the State Library of Victoria, 2015. Quarto, illustrated cloth, pp. 255, illustrated, light handling marks, but a fine copy. 'Samuel Thomas Gill, or STG as he was universally known, was Australia's most significant and popular artist of the mid-nineteenth century. For his contemporaries he epitomised 'Marvellous Melbourne' basking in the glow of the gold rushes. He worked in South Australia, Victoria and New South Wales and left some of the most memorable images of urban and rural life in colonial Australia. A passionate defender of Indigenous Australians and of the environment, Gill in his art celebrated the emerging quintessential Australian character. This is the first major comprehensive book to be devoted to Gill and presents a radical reassessment of one of the most important figures in Australian colonial art and reproduces, in some instances for the first time, some of the most startling images from… Read More

[Sydney : Gaelic Society of New South Wales, 3 Hunter Street, 1875-77]. Letter copybook. Quarto (270 x 220 mm), half calf over marbled papered boards (boards rubbed, leather a little worn); spine stamped in gilt 'Letter Book'; alphabetical tab dividers; contains numerous copies on onion-skin paper of outgoing local and overseas correspondence (some written in Scots Gaelic), most signed by Hon. Secretary John Macdonald; complete and well preserved. Around the time of the demise of the St. Andrew's Society of New South Wales, which had become defunct by the end of 1875, two other organisations dedicated to the fostering of Scottish culture in the colony were established in Sydney. One was the Caledonian Society of New South Wales; the other was the Gaelic Society of New South Wales. Both were only relatively short-lived, as in June 1878 they would amalgamate to form the Highland Society of New South Wales, a much more ambitious charitable and cultural organisation with politician Sir John Hay as… Read More

/ Composed for the piano by John W. Lewis. Boston : Oliver Ditson, 1854. First edition. Folio bifolium (330 x 250 mm), disbound; 2 pp music notation (arrangement for piano), the first page with decorative title; as issued, with plain front and rear sides; on this copy, the original owner has annotated the front with the title in pencil 'Australia March', and in ink 'No. 5' (the music would have been bound into the owner's personal album); the bifolium has separated neatly along its fold, but a very clean example. Although he is a relatively obscure figure in the landscape of nineteenth-century American classical music, at least some biographical facts about John William Lewis (1836-1898), composer of Australia March, are known. A member of a wealthy and religious New England family, he demonstrated a prodigious musical talent from an early age. He was still only 17 or 18 years old when Australia March was published by Oliver Ditson of Boston in 1854. The title of this instrumental piece - a 4/4 march… Read More

Cover: Successfully introduced into Fuller's brilliant Australian pantomime, ""The Bunyip,"" by Vince Courtney. Sydney : W. J. Deane & Son, [1917]. Quarto (295 x 250 mm), original cloth-backed printed wrappers, with the original owner's inscription in ink '21st November 1918 / Cecil Holl'; [4] pp. music notation (arrangement for voice and piano); slightly trimmed at top and bottom edges, but a good copy. The highly successful pantomime The Bunyip, with music and libretto by Australian composer Vince Courtney, was staged by entrepreneur Benjamin Fuller in 1916 at the Grand Opera House, Sydney; in 1917 at the Princess Theatre, Melbourne, and the Majestic Theatre, Adelaide; and in 1918 at the Empire, Brisbane. It seems reasonable to assume that the original owner of this sheet music for one of the show's tunes, My Chinese girl, purchased it after seeing the Brisbane production. Although its title contains the racist epithet Chinee, there is actually little difference between the sentiment in the… Read More
