An incunable leaf with a woodcut by a young Dürer from
Sebastian Brant's "The Ship of Fools".
Verso:Woodcut by Dürer and text printed on watermarked laid paper. Title in a large gothic font beside the woodcut: Derisio boni op(er)is. (The Mockery of Good Work).
The text above the woodcut is : "The protest of Jacob Locher Philomus". Locher translated the original German text into Latin. (See Notes below.)
Recto: Text only. Paginated CXXXVI (136.)
Printer: Johann de Olpe, Basel. Date: 1497.
Content: The text beside the woodcut in the roman font beginning Ambulans recto translates as:
He walking the upright path and fearing god is disparaged by him who advances along the disreputable way. The scoffer seeks wisdom and the teaching of sensible men is not easily found. He who is mocked: he appealed to god and he will hear him clearly: for the candour of the just man is mocked.

Recto: Text in two sizes. Heading Titilus ex folium. LII.
Printer: Johann de Olpe, Basel.
Date: 1497.
Content: This English translation of Brant's text is by Professor Edwin Zeydel who uses verse form, like the original. A section of his text on 'Of Not Following Good Advice' reads:
Some men are wise in what they sa
But hitched to folly's plow they stay;
The reason is that they rely
Upon their shrewdness keen and sly
And heed to no one's counsel pay
Until misfortune comes their way.

Description:
The "Song of the Three Children", also called "A Song of Creation" or simply The Benedicite, is a canticle taken from the book of Daniel in the Apocrypha. (The Greek translation of Daniel contained material not in the original Hebrew.) The three children, Shadrach, Meshack and Abednego recite or sing this song as they stand in the flames of Nebuchadnezzar's fiery furnace.
Recto: 11 lines of text in Latin written on vellum in a rounded Italian humanist script. Three Lombard-style coloured initials alternating in red and blue.
Verso:As Recto with another three coloured initials.
Origin: Italy.
Date: c.1480
Content: The text is from The Office of Our Blessed Lady at Lauds. It is a section of the "Song of the Three Children" (Daniel 3) on both Recto & Verso.
