Charming oil painting of a white cherry tree in bloom in the Normandy countryside, apparently painted and signed by the French composer.  While the composer is known to have made artworks of various kinds, we have never previously offered a painting by him and indeed, we find the signature in paint is unlike his usual penmanship. This is not so unusual, and a number of other works in this same style have appeared over the years at French auction houses, all likewise attributed to the composer of this name. Sammelband containing 8 pieces of printed music for piano 4 hands, including first editions of works by Schumann, Gade and Schulhoff and early editions by Schubert and Mendelssohn.  Of particular rarity and interest is the first edition arrangement of the Piano Quintet of Robert Schumann by his wife, the virtuoso pianist and composer Clara Schumann. In a letter to publisher Hermann Härtel (October 25, 2857), she writes: "I had mentioned to you once before that I wanted to simplify the arrangement of my husband's quintet. I have done so now and it cost me no little effort to do it without doing any harm to the composition. Happily, I believe that I have succeeded - I have played it myself with several people and nobody found it difficult. Brown-faced rubber ape mask with attached mohair black hair, with a flap on the back lower part of the hair which lifts and reattaches with Velcro. This allowed the actors who wore the masks to easily put them on and take them off. The mask is mounted permanently to a mannequin head and shoulders and housed in a custom-made shadow box. Shadow box: 12 x 14 x 19.75 in.; mask: 10 x 10.5 x 16 in.Though the main actors in the film who played apes (Maurice Evans, Kim Hunter, Roddy McDowell, etc.) spent hours in the makeup chair every day to achieve the amazing ape effect, there wasn't the time or budget to do the same for the other actors playing background apes (still, $1 million of the $6 million budget was spent on makeup). In fine condition. The work was composed around 1790. The French violinist and composer Rodolphe Kreutzer was one of the most famous and influential virtuosos of his time. From 1795 he was professor at the Paris Conservatory, and from 1801 to 1821 he was concertmaster and director of music of the Paris Opera. At this time, Kreutzer wrote about 40 operas and numerous works for violin. Stipple line engraving depicting Shakers engaged in their particular form of religious worship, ca. 1830, displayed in a worn but handsome period bird's eye maple frame.  Text below the image, partially covered by the frame, reads "Shakers near Lebanon, / State of New York."  Unexamined out of frame but evidently somewhat trimmed at margins and more significantly along the upper edge and mounted to rigid backing, scattered staining and light foxing, overall in good condition.  Framed to 18.5 x 14.25 inches (47 x 36.2 cm.).Several rows of Shakers, separated by gender, are shown performing a step dance in the meeting hall, with a female spectator seated in left foreground and African American men shown in the group. The short man at the head of the second row of Shakers is likely Brother David Rowley.  Cloaks and hats hang on pegs in the background.  The scene is known to depict the dance formation called the Square Order Shuffle in the 1824 Meetinghouse, Church… Read More

Signed October 11, 1971 Newsweek cover ("New Maestro, New Beat: New York Philharmonic's Pierre Boulez") from the important French composer and conductor, one of the major innovators and forces in 20th century music. In good condition with an affixed original mailing label and sold together with the collector's original letter and a reply from the NY Phil enclosing the signed magazine.  8 x 11 inches (21 x 28 cm).

Thick stock color illustration of the 1985 work "Untitled (figures)", the extracted cover of his 1987 Abbeville calendar page, signed boldly in silver marker to the lower right by the American graffiti artist and social activist known for his instantly recognizable visual language of dancing figures and his work to bridge the gap between high and low art.  The work features an array of bodies fighting for room in a colourful crowded space, emulating the vibrancy of graffiti art but also the energy of bodies dancing the upbeat rhythm of hip hop music. 11.8 x 13.8 inches (30 x 35 cm). Mounted to rigid white cardstock, with an advertisement clipping to verso, in fine condition.

A excised page from a Christie's New York 19th and 20th Century Prints auction catalogue (28 April 1979) signed in full "Andy Warhol" beneath the reproduced image of his iconic Campbell's Cream of Mushroom Soup. In April 1979, the original obtainer of this item heard Andy Warhol was signing copies of Interview at Fiorucci and went after attending the Christie's morning auction. Upon meeting Warhol, the artist noticed the auction catalogue and inquired if any of his artwork was included and subsequently signed this page.The set of ten color screenprints advertised on the present page were based on the Campbell's soup can, one of Andy Warhol's best-known icons. In 1962 Warhol produced a series of thirty-two silkscreen paintings depicting the cans—one canvas for each variety of soup available at the time. Highly amusing signed photograph of the famed conductor riding a ski lift up the slope of 9,000 foot Baldy mountain during his "day off" during a cross-country tour with the NBC Symphony, where he and the 125 members of the orchestra had stopped over en route to a concert engagement in Seattle. Toscanini has inscribed in red ink to the Second Flute and Saxophone player of the orchestra: "To John Fulton / sweet remembrance of our unforgettable tour / (Sun Valley / 1950) / Arturo Toscanini." Mounting remnants to verso, significant staining and some surface chips/nicks to the image surface mostly limited to the right-hand upper quarter, else fine. 8 x 10 inches (20.3 x 25.4 cm).

Used; Like New/Used; Like New. Typed document signed "Louis B. Mayer" and "Dmitri Tiomkin," 6 pages, August 21, 1929, Culver City, California. The contract (or "agreement") between Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and Tiomkin is written in the form of a letter to "Dear Mr. Tiomkin"; it refers to Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer  in the first person plural and to Tiomkin in the second person. The contract defines the rules pertaining to the use of the Russian-born American film composer's services by MGM Studios in a "photoplay" involving the Albertina Rasch Ballet. The "photoplay" is not named, but the date and the participation of the Albertina Rasch Ballet allow to identify it as the short film A Night at the Shooting Gallery (1929). 6 pp., 8 1/2 x 11 in. Personal check, 8.25 x 3 inches (21 x 7.7 cm), filled out and signed by Kern, "Jerome D. Kern," payable to the stenographer firm of Tausig & Lewis for $159.00, September 14th, 1939. Check is endorsed on reverse by Tausig & Lewis. Expected cancellation holes just slightly affecting the signature, generally fine.

Two postcard portraits of English provenance of the great Ukrainian-American violinist from his years as a prodigy, one of them signed (in Latin script), with signature sideways along right edge.  5.5 x 3.5 inches (signed card 14.2 x 9 cm, unsigned card 13.7 x 8.8 cm).  Signed card with upper right corner slightly bumped; unsigned card with some damage to photo layer from postmark to verso; else in fine condition.Both post cards were actually mailed (in 1905 and 1907).  Senders and recipients seem obscure; the "Miss Edith Baird" in Ilford, Essex, to whom the 1907 card is addressed, should not be mistaken for the chess player (1859–1924) of the same name.

Melies," one page, 8.5 x 10.75, February 4, 1913. On elaborated printed  advertising letterhead: "Manufacture de films pour cinématographes. G. Méliès fabricant b[réve]té 16 passage de l'Opéra Paris IXe. Original jumbo cabinet photograph of the important violinist and Brahms collaborator, signed and inscribed on the lower blank mount and inscribed "Berlin, 26th Mai 1900." Photographed by Atelier Victoria of Berlin, with the photographer's impressed stamp lower right. 7.25 x 12.75 inches (18.5 x 32.5 cm). Crisp edges and corners, one area of light foxing, overall very fine. A most impressive example.

Signed lithograph by the legendary jazz trumpeter, being a limited signed edition promotional poster for his 1989 Warner Bros. album Amandla.  Miles signed 150 numbered copies of this poster to be used as promotional items, the present example numbered #92/150 and signed in silver ink, with Davis adding a single musical note to his name. The 17 x 35 inch poster has been framed to 26 x 43 inches overall and is in fine condition. Davis began drawing and painting in earnest in 1980, during a period of recovery from addiction and other health issues. While largely overshadowed by his music during his lifetime, Davis' visual art was used for the covers of the albums "Star People" and "Amandla", as well as the backdrops for several of his live performances, and has seen gallery showings around the world in the years since the musician''s death. Amandla was Davis's third and final collaboration with producer Marcus Miller and incorporates elements of go-go, funk, and swing jazz.
