Very faint offsetting to pages opposite of plates. ; Three ribald tales of marital infidelity that are part of, but typically expurgated from, the complete Canterbury Tales. As in the rest of the Tales, these were told to the protagonist 'Pilgrim' by his fellow traveling pilgrims as they rested on their way to the shrine of St. Thomas a Beckett at Canterbury. In these three, the Merchant, the Miller, and the Reeve each have a wife not wholly committed to the relationship, and indiscreet dalliance ensues, not to mention "burning with Venus' fire." Grenley, "The Manticora Press strives to produce finely printed material both in terms of design, and especially in terms of execution. What we detest is Madison Avenue slickness, all kinds of offset printing, and graphic designers afraid of the composing stick." Using a borrowed Albion press, Manticora had the tinyest output and the lifespan of a mayfly. Despite that, this book is an example of fine printing, with the title page printed in black and red, the fanciful device of the press and other devices in red. Small spotting to pages 24, 25, 55.; Largely a witty memoir of John St. John's time with the British Royal Marines in European theaters of World War II. His account of time in service highlights the ludicrous aspects of military life and the boring futility of tramping around Europe without enemy engagement. Evelyn Waugh was in the author's Royal Marines unit, was an occasional, conversational companion, and appears only sporadically in this ambitiously-titled memoir, mostly in incidents observed by the author. The price of tulip bulbs rose to unimaginable extremes as people assigned value to the bulbs far in excess of their intrinsic value. The average person could buy, hold, and resell a single bulb, and the wealthy could have vast holdings.
