Probably published in 1913 or 1914. Beautiful quarto, bound in full leather. Jam-packed with fantastic Art Nouveau illustrations and decorations by Pogàny: the bookmakers spared no extravagance. The whole book is printed by offset lithography (by Vincent Brooks, Day & Sons, London) in multiple colors on every page. Includes many tipped-in four-color reproductions (by The Dux Engraving Co., Glasgow). Interior is in lovely shape: clean and unmarked. Cover is in poor condition. While gilt stamping to spine and front board remain bright, the leather is disintegrating at the edges and the front hinge is very weak, to the point of also affecting the hinge of the front end-sheets. Back cover is discolored, probably due to moisture. Ribbon bookmark is rotted near the end. Very scarce. Art/Poetry.

Nicknamed Rajneesh (translating roughly to God of the Night) as a child, the notorious mystic founded a communist-literature library at an early age ('But finding it a corpse I became interested in anarchism') and experienced a spiritual epiphany at 21 while seated beneath a tree in Jabalpur's Bhawartal Garden on the vernal equinox. Long before establishing an ashram and descending on rural Oregon with his followers, he traveled India as a circuit lecturer, becoming branded by the press as the 'sex guru' because of his unorthodox views on Tantrism, here laid out in a later iteration in this appropriately formatted bedside edition. 137 pp.

A reprint of Volume I, Number 8 of the A∴A∴'s 'Review of Scientific Illuminism', first published on the autumn equinox of 1912. This exploration of the tarot precedes the Thoth deck's creation by more than 30 years, and it's publication by 60, giving the reader unique insight into how Crowley's approach evolved in the intervening years. When Samuel Weiser first reprinted the issue in 1976, they retained the original typography and treated the cover image with some resonant photo-offset recolorization; by the time this fourth printing hit the shelves, the venerable occult publishers were in the process of moving from their Manhattan location to the coast of southern Maine.
