This copy was awarded to Miss Grace Johnstone for 1st Prize for her Music Marks in 6th Music Class, on 22nd July, 1886 Decorated floral endpages age-stained at edges. 150 pps. 18 pages of ads.

Finely bound as a Mill Hill School prize with school crest in gilt to the front and rear boards. School prize bookplate to the front pastedown, 'New Foundation Day 1885' addressed to Frank H Nimmo for obtaining a scholarship. The fourth edition of this informative work on astronomy. In a full calf binding. Externally bright with minor rubbing to the joints and extremities. Pages are bright. Scattered spotting. In wonderful condition overall.

Leipzig: Bernhard Tauchnitz, 1933. First Tauchnitz edition. 272 pp. Publisher's cream wraps titled in black to spine and front wrap. Front hinge has a three inch split, rendering the front panel rather fragile. Essentially a very good, clean copy of a book that when found in its Tauchnitz "travelling library" form is often very well used indeed. Internally clean. The fact that it was afforded a Tauchnitz printing, is if nothing else a testament to the popularity of this collection of beautifully constructed little stories.

Remembered for adaptations of her novella "Light in the Piazza", Spencer wrote for over seven decades and was jury-selected for the Pulitzer for her fiction depicting family, racial and class animosities in the Deep South. This Crooked Way is an atmospheric novel set in Mississippi Delta and surrounding hill country, using Spencer's knowledge from growing up in a tiny racially segregated village.

Galveston: Energy Earth Communications, 1981. First edition. 66pp. Perfect bound card covers. Near fine. Scarce first work of award-winning African-American poet. Mullen grew up in a small Black community in Fort Worth, Texas that spoke a local vernacular that her family, hailing from Pennsylvania, did not. Her experience there offered her a sense of otherness that was isolating, but also nurturing of her keen powers of observation. A collection that incorporates her feminism, and responds to the Civil Rights movement and social and cultural movements of the 60-70s as they relate to African and Mexican American communities. In her own words the work "features the plain, colloquial free verse that my mother appreciates." Mullen is a poetry and Black literature Professor at UCLA and is also known for rediscovering Fran Ross's important and once overlooked novel, Oreo.

Doll and clothes in very good condition, bright and unmarked, light wear and label to box 37 x13 cm.
