Uncut illustrated sheet from William Frank Richardson's 1998 English translation of the first book of Vesalius's 1543 De Humani Corporis Fabrica (On the Fabric of the Human Body), vividly hand-marbled by Richard J. Wolfe. The anatomical images featured are full-length side and rear views of the human skeleton. Publisher Jeremy Norman commissioned these marbled sheets for use as endpapers in the deluxe limited issue of the book. A fine example. Single uncut sheet, measuring 23 x 17.5 inches, printed with text and anatomical images from De Humani Corporis Fabrica, hand-marbled in blue, yellow, and pink.

London: William Heinemann, 1909. Signed limited first edition, number 425 of 1000 copies, of Arthur Rackham's illustrated version of this German tale, first published in 1811. Celebrated for his depictions of fairy creatures, Rackham is ideally suited for this tale of a water spirit seeking a soul: "below sparkle, stately and solemn, many noble ruins, washed by the loving waters which win from them delicate moss-flowers and entwining clusters of sea-grass. Those who dwell there are very fair." Rackham's wave designs, in particular, lend a Japanese woodblock-inspired Art Nouveau element to the work, as in the image of Undine sinking into the Danube. Each diminutive volume contains two instructive and entertaining tales, from the Italian aeronaut Zambeccari's real-life account of a dangerous hot air balloon expedition to inspirational works of short fiction. As the title suggests, these four storybooks were intended, as a set, to occupy an hour of leisure. Text in French.
