Description:
Popayan: Bruno Ortiz, 1852. Very good.. Broadsheet, approximately 18 x 13.5 inches. Removed from a bound volume. Minor loss at upper right corner, not affecting text. Light tanning. An unrecorded broadsheet from Popayan that discusses the disarray amongst the Rojos and Conservadores, rival factions in the turbulent politics of Colombia during the early 1850s. The anonymous author urges the unification of the Conservadores in order to counteract the perception of political gain by the Rojos despite their equal if not greater infighting. Description:
[Chicago]: W.B. Conker Company, 1897. Very good.. [12]pp. Publisher's self wrappers printed in red, white, blue, and black, the interior text printed in red and black. The whole printed on linen. Moderate wear and rubbing, minor soiling and toning, some light bleedthrough from the portions printed in red. A rare educational book printed entirely on linen and intended to teach the alphabet to American children at the turn of the 20th century. The book begins with a full page printing of the alphabet in both upper case (black) and lower case (red). The remainder of the text contains twenty-six illustrations (three per page) and three words of text paired with a letter of the alphabet printed in red upper case. For example, the letter "A" is illustrated with a fisherman standing by an acorn tree on which an axe leans, and the words "Acorn," "Axe," and "Angler" printed beneath the picture. The letter "B" shows a boy riding a bicycle on the shore with a hot-air balloon floating in the sky in the… Read More

Light toning and minor wear. A substantial run of eight issues of this rare and irregularly published newsletter for the pacifist wing of the Unitarian Church, with all issues and attendant ephemera printed during World War II. Description:
[Knoxville, Tn: George Roulstone, 1794. About very good.. Partially-printed broadside, 6.5 x 8 inches, completed in manuscript, docketed on verso in ink manuscript noting the summons was served. Modest marginal chipping, evenly tanned, old folds. An early and decidedly rare imprint from pre-statehood Tennessee, when it was known as the "Territory south of Ohio." According to the description for the copy at Middle Tennessee State (one of only two known institutional copies), the work was "Probably printed by George Roulstone in Knoxville, who was printer to the territory in at least 1794 and 1795, and printer to the state of Tennessee from 1796 to 1803." The present document was completed in manuscript on June 3, 1794. The clerk, Charles McClung, signed the bottom of the document in ink, "Chas. McClung, Ck." McClung was a surveyor who, among other activities, drew the original plat of Knoxville in 1791. He also served as the first clerk of Knox County. The present document is a court summons for two… Read More

Description:
Towanda, Pa: December 24, 1862. Very good.. Broadside, 17.75 x 12 inches. Old folds, minor offsetting, scattered foxing. An apparently unrecorded and important broadside issued by the Pennsylvania state government during the Civil War, laying out measures for the collection of excise taxes by the newly constituted Internal Revenue Service. The Revenue Act of 1862, passed by Congress and signed into law by Abraham Lincoln, established the Commissioner of Internal Revenue, provided for the levying of excise taxes on everyday goods and services, and adjusted the income tax rates made under the same act of the previous year. It is the second of the act's three main tenets that the present broadside addresses. Here, H. Lawrence Scott, the tax collector for the 13th District of Pennsylvania in Wyoming County announces that the excise taxes for 1862 are now due. He offers two times and locations for remitting the taxes in late January 1863 (Maynard's Hotel in Tunkhannock and the Central Hotel in… Read More

Description:
Philadelphia: W.W. Weeks, 1842. Good.. 86pp. 12mo. Stitched; wrappers presumed lacking. Lightly dampstained throughout, lightly worn. A fun and rare little volume, comprising an alphabetical listing of terms and their interpretations as to significance in one's dreams. For example, "Roast meat. To dream you eat roast meat, signifies that you are fallen into sin and gluttony"; "Kite. To dream of your seeing a kite showeth you shall be in danger of thieves and robbers"; and other such signs of positivity such as dreaming of eyebrows, eating broth, or frogs. The dream book is followed by a list of spells and charms, and the questionable science of fortune telling with cards -- herein referred to as "cardiology." A rare work in any edition, we find that this edition is unrecorded. A single copy of the 1840 edition at AAS; a single copy of the 1841 at the University of Delaware, and two copies of the 1843 edition in OCLC. All three recorded editions include a folding plate, which is presumed lacking here.

Description:
[Ann Arbor, Mi: October 23, 1940. Very good.. [4]pp. on a single folded sheet. Light wear, several contemporary ink emendations. A rare program for a concert presented by the University Musical Society at the University of Michigan featuring famed African American contralto singer Marian Anderson. The first page prints the songs sung by Anderson, which included her normal selection of classical pieces by Handel, Carissimi, Schubert, and Bellini, and "Negro Spirituals" arranged by Burleigh, Boatner, and Brown. The internal two-page spread prints the lyrics for the songs. An attendee of the concert has made a handful of ink corrections to the program, crossing out and replacing a song title, adding two additional spirituals ("The City I'm Bound For" and "The Beautiful City"), and nixing an entire section of classical songs then adding the words, "South American Songs" in their place. These were all very likely last-minute changes made by Anderson and her team, and probably announced prior to the… Read More

Description:
London, 1845. Very good.. Small broadside, 8 x 10.5 inches. Minor discoloration and wear at edges. Scarce stock certificate that conferred title to land in the small Gulf Coast town of Trespalacios, Texas, offered for sale to Londoners at the very end of Texas' period as an independent republic. The certificate granted the holder a small lot, 2500 square feet (25 x 100 feet), from a block of thirty-two and enjoined him or her to improve the block within five years of its purchase. The land seems to have been offered directly by the town itself through a land office maintained on Leadenhall Street in the City of London, with its interests registered with and approved by the "General Texan Consulate," that is, the Texas Legation that was located above a liquor store in St. James's. The dates on this broadside are interesting, as it seems to place its printing between the annexation of Texas by the United States in December 1845 and the official transfer of power in February 1846. The town, also known… Read More

Tokyo: Raten Amerika Ch kai, 1957. Very good.. [1],114,[1]pp., plus color photographic frontispiece. Original pictorial wrappers printed in brown, tan, and green. Minor wear and dust-soiling. First edition of this rare biographical account of life in Brazil by Kiyoshi Yamamoto, a doctor of agriculture who served as Chairman of the Japan-Brazil Culture Promotion Committee. The work covers "fifty years of progress" among Japanese immigrant farmers and their lives in Brazil, published in Japan to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of "the hard work of our overseas compatriots" in South America. Chapters cover Japanese immigration to Brazil from the beginning, the population of Japanese colonies, the acceptance and status of Japanese emigrants, Japanese farmers and their situation, the state of Japanese commerce and industry in Brazil, the history of racial prejudice in the country (including part of a chapter on the importing of Black slaves from Africa), Japan's restrictions on emigration, as well as… Read More
