Description:
Philadelphia and New York: Underwood, Bald, Spencer, & Hufty, and Danforth, Underwood & Co., 1840. Original uncut and uncirculated sheet o private scrip ($5 denomination) issued by the James River and Kanawha Company, which was intending to build a canal between the western counties of Virginia (now West Virginia) and the coast. Although that plan was not fully successful, the canal towpath did become the roadbed for a railroad, which became the more effective means of transportation. In 1840 the treasurer of Virginia underwrote the guarantee bonds amounting to $123,026.66 for the construction of bridges along the James River. The scrip offered here was issued for that purpose. In the Jones and Littlefield book, Virginia Obsolete Paper Money, this scrip is described and given the identification number PR60-468. The scrip is in very good condition, clean and crisp, with some offsetting from having been placed next to an identical sheet for a long time.. Original. Single Sheet. Very Good.… Read More

Description:
New York: Unpublished, 1925. Original photograph by the Australian-American photographer Anton Bruehl (1900-1982). A vintage (circa 1925) gelatin silver print mounted on cardstock. 7 1/2 inches by 5 1/2 inches. The photograph is unsigned, but the composition of the still-life photo clearly is Bruehl's. From the same collection we have a signed photo that matches the size, backing, and printing of this one. In 1919 the Australian born Bruehl, along with his brother and parents, emigrated to the United States, where he worked for Western Electric as an electrical engineer until an exhibition of Clarence H. White's photographs persuaded him to change professions. In 1924 he enrolled in White's photography school and by the next year was hired to teach in the school. In a 1976 article for Image magazine, landscape photographer Joe Deal observed that "Anton Bruehl's background in engineering and love of machine forms in combination with his training under Clarence White resulted… Read More

Description:
Detroit, Michigan: Detroit Publishing Company, 1899. 6 3/4 inches by 9 inches. Famed western American photographer William Henry Jackson spent a great deal of time taking pictures of Native Americans. Late in his career, he formed a relationship with the Detroit Publishing Company and turned over to them thousands of his negatives as well as those of other Western photographers.. Some of those negatives were printed as photochroms, which are color lithographs produced from black and white photographs. The negative from which this photochrom was produced has been attributed to Denver photographer Charles A. Nast by both the National Gallery and the Amon Carter Museum. This photochrom of a Ute family is beautifully colored and is a respectful portrayal of the Native American culture. It is in excellent condition. [Note: Around 1910 the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel (SPG) in Canada adapted the image into an almost ominous black and white printed postcard, and re-titled it, "A… Read More
