Description:
Venice: Girolamo Porro, 1589. First printing of some material. Very Good. Quarto (21 cm); [140] pages, including 34 allegorical copperplate engravings with facing-page explanations. Text within typographical borders; in Latin and Italian. Woodcut decorated initials and tail-pieces. Manuscript marginalia in very neat and readable contemporary hand. Bound in plain vellum, titled in ink on spine (faded). Lower portion of spine ruptured in two places and along joint. Pages thumbed but unblemished, plates are crisp and contrasty. References: Adams J-213; Landwehr, French, Italian, Spanish and Portuguese emblem books 415. A first-wave example of baroque book illustration, and a stylistic breakthrough for the illustrator (and printer) Girolamo Porro, this strange book occupies an undefined space between emblem book and prophecy, between folklore and political propaganda. Although the text is attributed to Joachim of Fiore, a 12th-century cleric, there is no connection, and the life of Joachim…

Description:
Verona: Tipografia Gambaretti, 1805. Only edition. Fine. Quarto (235mm); 40 pages. Title within typographical oval frame. Bound in Remondini-made black and silver woodblock-printed decorated paper over stiff pasteboard (see "Remondini: un editore del settecento," p. 122, #37, for an example in black and red). Red speckled edges. A collection of occasional verse commemorating the untimely death of a young member of the Marioni family, Carlo, dead at age 20. (Carlo is entombed in the Marioni palazzo at Canareggio near Verona whose walls were decorated by Giandomenico Tiepolo when Carlo was a child.) The opening poem in the collection is by the great proto-Romantic Ippolito Pindemonte, addressed to Carlo's mother (as are most of the other verses in the collection). Other contributions are by notable Veronesi such as Mario and Leonardo Miniscalchi. The book is bound in one of the signature Remondini papers of the late 18th century.

Description:
Bassano: Remondini, 1795. Good. 16cm; 298 pages. Bound in original publisher's boards. Boards worn with worm trails present at joints and extending to first two leaves of text. Text somewhat shaken in binding. A few leaves are dog-eared, but text is generally clean. Book bears several manuscript ownership marks of Carlo de Herra (fl. 1800-1850). De Herra apparently owned the book in his youth, and claimed it by writing his name on the upper board (dated 1791), and on all three edges of the text block. The book is protected by contemporary wrappers fashioned out of an envelope addressed to Ferdinando de Herra, with remains of original red wax seal. Pen trials on upper flap of wrapper. Verse epistles by three of ArcadiaÂ’s most representative voices. The Accademia degli Arcadi was a literary fraternity (and by imitation, a literary style) established at the end of the 17th century with the aim of replacing extravagant baroque fashions with more serious and rational expression. This…

Pages lightly toned. Preserved in custom-built clamshell box. First printing of the posthumous papers of the progressive journalist turned conservative romantic, Alessandro Verri, co-editor of "Il Caffè," chronicling the turbulent end of the 18th century.
