Roberts was the first independent, professional British artist to travel so extensively in the Near East. His tour in 1838-9 produced 272 sketches, a panorama of Cairo and three full sketchbooks, enough material to "serve me for the rest of my life" (Roberts, eastern journal, 28 Jan 1839). Over the next decade he made "a series of intire new drawings" for the large coloured lithographs executed by Louis Haghe for The Holy Land, Syria, Idumea, Arabia, Egypt & Nubia, which was originally published by subscription, 1842-9. No publication before this had presented so comprehensive a series of views of the monuments, landscape, and people of the Near East. [London: Hodder and Stoughton. c. 1868]. c. 24 x 20 cm. Original early chromolithographed (colour printed) caricature map with Wales depicted as the figure of Owen Glendowr. The four lines of verse beneath map read: ''Geography bewitch'd - Owen Glendowr, / In Bardic grandeur, looks from shore to shore, / And sings King Arthur's long, long pedigree, / And cheese and leeks, and knights of high degree''. Published in 'Geographical Fun', an atlas of caricature maps of European counties drawn, according to the preface, by a fifteen-year-old girl 'seeking to amuse a brother confined to his bed by illness'. In actuality the author was William Harvey (1796-1873), a London doctor and journalist, best-known for his book 'London Scenes and London People', published in 1863. Full tree calf, gilt ruled spine, black morocco label with gilt lettering. 2 sepia aquatinted plates, multiple ink vignettes in contents. Upper joint cracked, spine rubbed, label partly missing. 'Rev. Richard Warner (1763–1857) was an English clergyman and writer of a considerable number of topographical books based on his walks and his interest in antiquarianism ... In August 1796 Warner went on holiday to Wales, walking an average 26 miles a day, and recorded his travels in letters that were later published. Book plates removed from pastedowns leaving gum stain. 2 folding maps and 100 steel engraved plates. Neat repair to one map. Light wear to bindings, contents with occasional light spotting, generally clean and fresh.
