Walpoleana - A Family Production

WALPOLE, Hon. Frederick. Catalogue of Political Pamphlets relating to Sir Robert Walpole's Administration. [n.p. n.p.], ca 1840.£2800

Manuscript on paper, 12mo, ff. 77, including the occasional blank, with further blanks at end, on folded notepaper loosely inserted into a limp vellum tongued wallet, inscribed 'Rt. Hble. The Earl of Orford' and 'Walpole Pamphlets / Catalogue of', stamp duty rates printed on the paper lining; a little marked but largely clean; from the Norfolk collection of Ronald Clive Fiske, with his armorial bookplate and shelf-mark label, occasional contemporary advertisements for similar works (some pasted to leaves), as well as more recent bookseller's descriptions loosely inserted.

A handsome and extensive nineteenth-century manuscript bibliography of pamphlets and other printed ephemera relating to Britain's de facto first Prime Minister, Sir Robert Walpole (1676-1745).

Arranged alphabetically by title (as most entries are anonymous), this document presents a remarkably detailed bibliographical record of the Robinocracy - as Walpole's administration came to be known - and is also a fascinating labour of love and a record of familial interest. Although apparently treasured by the naval officer and Tory M.P. Frederick Walpole (1822-76), who has added a manuscript title-page, introduction (quoting Macaulay) and the occasional addition, the majority of the text is in at least one other distinct hand. We can speculate that the catalogue was in the family's possession for some time prior to Frederick's amendments, as the limp vellum wallet likely dates to 1815, with its printed reference to New Stamp Duties on the interior. Perhaps this was the work and possession of Frederick's father, Horatio, 3rd Earl of Orford (1753-1858). Whatever its aegis, it is an important near contemporary piece of Walpoleiana.

Few figures incited the churning of the eighteenth-century popular presses like Walpole. His actions, personality and lengthy tenure were so controversial that a vast amount of printed material was produced both in support of and opposition to his administration, much of which is recorded in this impressive manuscript catalogue.

Of course, many of the works were unfavourable; as Langford has observed, 'Walpole's characteristic image was that of a parvenu Norfolk placeman enriched by a career of systematic corruption (he had been prosecuted by the Tories for official peculation in 1712) and elevated to supreme power for his lack of principle... his hegemony inevitably drew the full fire of Grub Street on his personal position. He was the Great Man, the English Colossus, the Man Mountain. He also appeared as the perfect representative of the politics of illusion – the Norfolk trickster, the Savoy Rareeshowman, Palinurus the magician, Merlin the wizard, the Screenmaster-General'. Yet for each prose attack and satirical poem, his supporters produced counter epistles and treatises in his defense, many of which are systematically recorded here.

Inscribed copy to American film director (and fellow pilot) Tay Garnett (1894 - 1977). Spanning nearly 60 years, Garnett's scriptwriting and directing career moved from the silents to the heyday of the Hollywood motion picture studio to television; of the hundreds of projects he either wrote or directed, he is best known for directing the American noir classic The Postman Always Rings Twice (1946). As a young man he served as Naval Air pilot in WWI and worked as a cartoonist before finding work as a title writer for Mack Sennett Studios. By the time sound came along, he was directing feature theatricals. Garnett and Udet met while Garnett was directing SOS Iceberg (1933). The two had much in common: both were accomplished cartoonists but most importantly both served, albeit in enemy forces, as air pilots in WWI, Udet being a… Read More

Quarto (9 ¾" x 7½") bound in period calf with modern rebacking, original gilt spine leather laid down and ruled gilt edges to cover. Translated by Joh Stevens. First English Edition. This is a highly regarded chronicle of the conquest and colonization of Peru by Spaniards in the latter part of the 16th century and is lauded for its (at the time) objectivity. Cieza de Leon's Chronica was to appear in 4 sections, this translation being the first part only, all that was available of the history until the latter part of the 19th century.Pedro Cieza de Leon was a Spanish conquistador and chronicler of Peru. He is known primarily for his history and description of Peru, Cronicas del Peru. He wrote this book in four parts, but only the first was published during his lifetime; the remaining sections were not published until the 19th and 20th centuries. Discolouring to inner upper part of back wrapper. Very light brownspotting throughout. An overall fine copy. 71 pp. The exceedingly rare first Turkish translation of Shakespeare’s Hamlet published in the recently founded Turkish Republic. Published by the Ministry of Education as part of “Examples from World Literature” series for schools, this translation is not only abridged but also employs a thoroughly simple language in line with the plain language movement that was initiated in the late 19th century. Written Ottoman Turkish had developed into a convoluted and tortuous language only a minor educated elite mastered and the present publication is one of the earliest and finest examples of this bourgeoning movement. [London?], [nd. but possibly ca 1914].. Two pages, closely written in pencil, with deletions and insertions, on two quarto sheets of pale blue T.H. Saunders letterstock (watermarked '1913'). Horizontal fold, with minor creases and smudges, but very good. An intriguing manuscript in which Shaw embarks on a characteristically discursive consideration of war, politics, economics and matters of civilization, with the tone of possibly having been written in response to a request for views on same: "Pardon the abruptness of the suggestion; but suppose we blow the German fleet out of the water, or under it, and the consequence is that Russia profits by our victory to the extent of carving a Baltic province out of Germany and condemning Sweden to live in the bear's mouth, will that be a result for western civilization to rejoice over? The French seem to think that because Russia has drained away from France so much of the capital that is needed at home for making French towns and French children healthier… Read More

Thomas Barlow (1607-1691) was an English academic and clergyman, who became Provost of The Queen's College, Oxford and Bishop of Lincoln. He was considered, in his own times and by Edmund Venables writing in the Dictionary of National Biography, to have been a trimmer, a reputation mixed in with his academic and other writings on casuistry. His views were in fact Calvinist and strongly anti-Catholic, and he was one of the last English bishops to identify the Pope as the Antichrist He worked in the 1660s for the 'comprehension' of nonconformists, but supported the crackdown of the mid-1680s; and declared loyalty to James II of England on his accession, having strongly supported the Exclusion Bill which would have denied the Catholic James the succession.

Pope Pius V's response to Queen Elizabeth I of England assuming governance of the Church of England included support of the… Read More

Summary: "The Bone People, first published in 1984 by Spiral, New Zealand. About this book: The Bone People is an unusual story of love. It is unusual in the telling, the subject matter, and the form of love that the story depicts. This is in no way a romance; it is filled with violence, fear, and twisted emotions. At the story's core, however, are three people who struggle very hard to figure out what love is and how to find it. Hulme won New Zealand's Pegasus Prize for Literature (1984) for The Bone People. Then the book went on to win the prestigious Booker Prize (1985).
