[4], 124, [8] p.: 1 leaf of chromolithographed title page, many woodcut illustrations; 12 cm. Publisher's embossed dark blue cloth with gilt spine decoration gilt front cover title and illustration. All page edges gilt. Endpapers and 2 adjacent leaves at front and back are pale yellow. Title page chromolithographed in red, blue, and gilt. At head of title: Number 3. First of these almanacs published for the year 1854. Contains advertisements on endpapers, adjacent pages on yellow paper, and final 4 pages, primarily for businesses of interest to women. Includes a full-page ad for Comer's Commercial College, which shows four people in various occupations including a woman at a desk, presumably a clerk or secretary, two decades before office work was generally considered a suitable occupation for a woman. Also a half-page ad for Boston bookseller Wm. P. Tewksbury. Small blue bookseller's label on front fixed endpaper for L. Merriam, Greenfield. For each month there is the usual alamanac information along with a poem and full-page woodcut illustration by engraver John Andrew (who also has a full-page ad). Also includes additional poetry; an article on "Female Medical Schools and Physicians"; short pieces about the ambrotype gallery of Briggs & Knapp, and the photographic work of Whipple & Black, both of Boston; and a 5-page business directory of Boston. In Very Good Condition: rubbed, with some loss of gilt; loss of cloth at head of spine; occasional light foxing; a few pages opened carelessly; clean and tight.
