About This Item

David Nutt. London: David Nutt, 1887 12mo., plain card wraps with fitted dust jacket printed in red and black; outer edges untrimmed; pp. [xi], vi-xx, [iii], 4-70, [ii]; featuring a frontis by P.J. Hood behind loose tissue guard, a little creased, browned, and shelf-worn, previous owner's bookplate to ffep; very lightly cracked along gutter at p. [x-xi]; a very good copy of this unusual work.  Limited edition, one of just 500 copies printed on Japanese Paper. Translated by the author in June, and published in November 1887.  Rendered into English here for the first time by the Scottish poet and novelist Andrew Lang, Aucassin and Nicolette is a French fictional story likely written in the late 12th or early 13th century, of which just one extant manuscript still survives. A classic romantic epic featuring war and forbidden love, it combines prose and verse into what is known as a chantefable - literally translating as a 'sung story'. "He tells a love story", Lang writes of the unknown author in his introduction, "a story of love overmastering, without conscience or care of aught but the beloved". A lovely little volume. . Very Good. Soft cover. 1st Edition. 1st Printing. 1887.
