London: Longmans, Green, Reader, and Dyer, 1873 First edition, first issue, with the advertising leaf and no errata.. Original green cloth ruled in blind with gilt lettering on spine. . Octavo. Minor shelfwear. Brown coated endpapers. Later pencil ownership signature (Lauren Buchanan) to preliminary blank and some pencil marginalia on a few pages. Some marginal toning, but still quite crisp and fresh. A very good, tight copy of a notoriously fragile book. One of the most famous autobiographies ever, the present work "excited universal astonishment" (Printing and the Mind of Man, 345n). Mill devotes most of the work to the first thirty-five years of his life; the final chapter covers the years 1840 to 1870. He records his education by his famous father — learning Greek at the age of three, reading Plato at eight, and Aristotle at twelve — and details the numerous literary works that shaped his thinking throughout his life.
Synopsis
John Stuart Mill (1806-73) was educated by his father and through his influence obtained a clerkship at India House. He formed the Utilitarian Society which met to read and discuss essays, and in 1825 he edited Bentham’s Treatise upon Evidence . In 1826 he suffered an acute mental crisis and found that poetry helped him recover the will to live, particularly the work of Wordsworth. Having reconsidered his aims and those of the Benthamite school, he met Harriet Taylor and she inspired a great deal of his philosophy. They married in 1851. Utilitarianism was published in 1861 but before that Mill published his System of Logic (1843), Principles of Political Economy (1848) and On Liberty (1839). His other works include his classic Autobiography (1873). Mill retired in 1858 and became the independent MP for Westminster from 1865 to 1868. He spent the rest of his life in France and died in Avignon.

Since some of our less expensive books are located in a temperature-controlled storage area offsite, you may want to call ahead of time to insure that the book you want to see will be available. We feature a stock strong in literature, history, Western philosophy, women's studies, education, history of science and fine printing and artists' books. We are members of the Antiquarian Booksellers Association of America and the International League of Antiquarian Booksellers. We have books from the 15th to the 20th century in all prices ranges.
