First edition. Published anonymously, but written by Pierre Du Moulin. See J. Shawcross, Milton: A Bibliography for the Years 1624-1700, p. 285; annotation on Thomason copy: "March. 22. London". An attack on John Milton's "Pro Populo Anglicano Defensio" (published 1651), Cromwell, and the executioners of Charles I in 1649. Milton replied in his Defensio Secunda, 1654. In Very Good+ Condition: vellum is somewhat stained and soiled; some vellum rubbed away along front fore-edge; old ink marks on front free endpaper; pages are otherwise clean and tight.

Large engraved foldout map. With the armorial bookplate of Maclean of Ardgour on the front pastedown endpaper. An in-depth history of the city which also includes sections on the Company of Golfers, the Society of Bowlers, the Royal Company of Archers and the Company of Hunters. Some wear to extremities, small stain to front board, two old repairs to map and front hinge, joints partially split, two small mends to page 163. Internally very clean. A very good- copy. ; Octavo.

Part 1 - iv, 136p. first iv pages loosely inserted and on a larger size paper than the rest of the volume, they are creased and chipped to the edges. Part 2 - [iv], 124p this seems to lack iv pages at the start in comparison with the copy described by Holzenberg. The two parts bound together in original very worn quarter morocco. Signs of a bookplate having been removed from the front pastedown. Front free end paper detached and with some abrasions. Together with a volume of plates in the Middle HIll boards, the plates for part 1 loosely inserted, those for part 2 bound in. Some browning and spotting. 26 plates. Holzenberg 249 which refers to both vols. Part 2 and the plates are more difficult to find than part 1.
