About This Item

Montreal: Dawson Brothers, 1874. x,244 pp. 12mo. Original blue cloth with gilt lettering stamped to the spine. All edges trimmed. Slight bit of professional restoration to the top and bottom of the spine. Brown coated endpapers. Covers slightly rubbed. Half title. Folding map and folding diagram at the rear. Tight and clean copy. Presentation inscription on half title. Peel 3 #706. An account of the 1872 Fleming expedition from Edmonton to the West coast. Horetzky was also a pioneering photographer in Western Canada and took the earliest photographs of Alberta and some of the earliest of parts of British Columbia. Many of his images are now iconic. This copy has a presentation inscription to the Hon. Edward Blake dated April 1874, the year of publication. Edward Blake, was the second premier of Ontario, from 1871 to 1872 and leader of the Liberal Party of Canada from 1880 to 1887. It seems Horetzky tried to garner favour from many politicians for the travels and early photography. 1874
