About This Item
London, 1850. Hard Cover. Eighth Edition. Originally published in 1844 by John Churchill. vi + 319 pp. The Eighth Edition of this important work on creationism had the "note conclusory" (see page vi) re-written and is referred to as the Cheap Edition". Publisher's original half-leather binding with marbled boards and matching marbled end-papers. Five raised bands to the spine. Title in gilt to the spine. Former owner's book-plate on the front paste-down. Red speckled page block edges. Two other former owner's neat names on the second free end-paper one of whom has written on the verso: "Carter, in a lecture (1954), says that Vestiges of Creation was published first in 1844, and is probably by Chambers". Overall a VG copy. Vestiges influenced Charles Darwin's Theory of Evolution. Chambers, a self-taught, Amateur Naturalist was the anonymous author of Vestiges which was highly influential in mid 19th century scientific and political circles. Vestiges was much maligned by its Victorian critics, but it has fared well at the hands of modern historians and is now perceived as an important piece of Victorian literature. It was originally written anonymously due to its controversial nature. At the time of cataloguing I can find no UK editions of this title being offered for sale and a only a couple of US editions from a roughly comparable era. Scans invited.
