About This Item

The Civil War Through the Camera - A Complete Illustrated History of the Civil War
by Henry W. Elson, Francis Trevelyan Miller, Mathew Brady, et al.
New York: McKinlay, Stone & Mackenzie, C. 1912. Hardcover. Bound in heavy boards - green cloth with gilt on the spine. The 16 color repros of civil war paintings are on heavy stock paper. Unpaginated. The pages have decorative borders. Also laid in is the original pamphlet advertising the publishing of Miller's Photographic History of the Civil Way - to be published in Ten Volumes.
To commemorate the semi-centennial of the Civil War, several publishers collaborated to produce the Photographic History of the Civil War, one of the classic works on the conflict. To generate sales, a subscriber's edition of 16 parts was distributed weekly through major newspapers. Each part contains a full color frontispiece (not found in the Photographic History), variant text, and hundreds of Mathew Brady's fascinating photographs, many never before published. These are all bound together in this volume. The decorative borders with the dates of the events seem to be unique to this edition. Very attractive and profusely illustrated.
The bound magazines and color repros are in excellent condition. The pamphlet has a little wear, a few chips and tears. Please note - this is a heavy book (appx. 5 pds.) and the buyer will need to cover the cost of shipping.
