Monaco: Imprimerie de Monaco, 1920. First edition.
SUMPTUOUS MONOGRAPH FROM THE OCEANOGRAPHIC INSTITUTE OF MONACO ON ANATOMY OF A DEEP SEA PARASITIC EEL--FINE DOUBLE-PAGE LITHOGRAPHIC PLATES.
14 inches tall folio volume, paper covers with title printed on tissue jacket with coat of arms of the Sovereign Prince of Monaco, handstamp of Ernest A. Lachner top of cover and half title, 76 pp, text printed on heavy rag paper, 5 double-page lithographed plates with tisue guards, Text in French. Cover edges age-toned, text clean and unmarked, plates bright and clean, very good. This monograph forms part of a series of scientific reports on marine life collected by Albert the 1st, Sovereign Prince of Monaco, collected from his yacht. The report was printed under the direction of Prince Albert, with the approval of Jules Richard, doctor of science, chief of zoologic studies. Simenchelys parasitica is also known as the snubnosed eel, is a species of deep-sea eel and the only member of its genus. It is found in the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, typically at a depth of 1,600–5,900 ft near the bottom. Although typically a scavenger, it is better known for using its powerful jaws and teeth to burrow into larger fishes as a parasite. Spencer Fullerton Baird reported that the eels are "not unfrequently found nestling along the backbone of the halibut and cod, where they seem to have the power of abiding for some time without actually causing death." Baird also made note of the eels' supposed habit of burrowing into the abdominal cavities of netted, gravid shad and eating their eggs within the span of "a few minutes". In 2002, Koyama et al. reported that they had cultured cells from the pectoral fin of a snubnosed eel and maintained them in vitro for over a year. This represents one of the first cases of successful long-term tissue culture derived from a deep-sea multicellular organism, and has implications for a range of biotechnological fields.
ALBERT I, PRINCE OF MONACO (1848 – 1922) devoted much of his life to the study of the sea and oceans. At only 22 years old, he embarked on a career in the then relatively new science of oceanography. Understanding the importance of the relationship between living creatures and their environment, he devised a number of techniques and instruments for measurement and exploration. He founded the Oceanographic Institute Foundation Albert I, Prince of Monaco, a private foundation established in 1906. It has two buildings: The Oceanographic Institute of Paris, now renamed Ocean House, and what became the world-renowned Oceanographic Museum of Monaco. This includes an aquarium, a museum, and a library, with research facilities in Paris. He owned four research yachts, Hirondelle, Princesse Alice, Princesse Alice II and Hirondelle II. Accompanied by some of the world's leading marine scientists, he travelled the length and breadth of the Mediterranean, making numerous oceanographic studies, maps and charts. In 1918, the US National Academy of Sciences awarded Prince Albert its Alexander Agassiz Medal for his achievements. The Explorers Club elected Albert I to its highest category of membership — Honorary Member — in 1921.
MAURICE JAQUET was conservator of the Oceanographic Museum of Monaco.
PROVENANCE: ERNEST A. LACHNER (1916-1996) was Curator, Dept. Vertebrate Zoology, National Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Institution. He was known internationally in the field of ichthyology for his studies on Indo-Pacific gobies and cardinal fishes. At least five new species of fishes have been named after Dr. Lachner, who published 85 scientific reports on the biology of fishes, museum collections and resources.

Description:
LONDON : John Van Voorst, 1856 A VG copy of the first edition in the original blind stamped decorative cloth binding with gilt titles to spine. With colour printed fold out frontispiece, 5 further colour plates and one plain plate as called for. The Revd Tugwell unashamedly addressed this work to 'the amateur rambler about our English coasts' and provides an account in plain language for the rambler to follow. The result is a charming example of victorian natural history - written to encourage the reader to understand nature better. With a listing of locations at the rear. The binding and the original endpapers are in very good clean condition with only a very slight marking to the top of the boards. The contents are also very clean and bright. The reverse of the plates have shadows of the plate images but there is little offsetting to the text. Small light book, please enquire if you would like us to assess postage at cost.

Description:
London : Lovell Reeve, 1854 A good copy with 20 hand coloured illustrations drawn by Sowerby and printed by Vincent Brooks. In the original decorative cloth binding with a gilt mollusk on the front board. This book forms part of Lovell Reeve's Popular Natural History series, designed for young people with aim of giving them an insight into the natural world. The decorative cloth bindings are very distinctive as is the good quality of the illustrations - with many of the volumes having hand coloured plates. This copy has been expertly rebacked to preserve the original spine and endpapers. It is therefore sound and tight. The front board has a couple of small indentations to the edges and a bumped top corner. The spine is dulled. The endpapers have slight marking. Contents: publisher's catalogue; half title; frontispiece; title page; preface; list of plates; text with 19 further plates; index. The paper has brown toning, particularly to edges and there is slight folding evident to the top page…

J. Griffin, 1822. Two volumes bound in one, 12mo, pp (2), 212; (4), 288, lightly age-toned throughout with the occasional page with mild foxing, otherwise very sound internally, contemporary half calf and marbled boards, rubbed, slightly worn at the corners, rebacked at some point with a later calf spine. The Oates-Selborne copy, with the bookplate of Robert Washington Oates, the later presentation labels to the Gilbert White Museum in1955, and the tiny Bibliotecha Oatesiana stamp on the final page. With the earlier bookplate of the surgeon John Wheeley Gough Gutch. [A pirated edition, without illustrations. It seems scarce - I have only been able to trace two other copies from this publisher in libraries. It is curious that two printers seem to have been involved - H. Price for the first volume and Kaygill on the colophon of the second. There is no seperate title page for the second volume, and this seems consistent with the copies on record. In his mid-thirties, Lawrence published two books of…

London: Harper Collins, 2002. First edition. Illustrated, large 8vo, pp 344, a very good new copy in an unfaded dustwrapper. [As our environment is subjected to increasing assault from climatic changes and pollutants, conservation has become a growing concern for both specialists and generalists alike. The first chapter of this book considers the political and institutional development of nature conservation and reviews the physical and biological nature of Britain, its geology, climate and wildlife habitats. Subsequent chapters cover the loss of habitats and species, how these losses have been managed and the techniques used to survey and monitor the integration of nature conservation policies in industries from agriculture to forestry and fisheries. Marren continues by discussing how nature conservation has emerged from the sidelines to become a major concern. He addresses the role of the media, weighs up the successes and failures of the conservation movement and looks to what the future may…
