About This Item

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1890. First American edition. Publishers morocco. Otherwise very good condition. A classic of African exploration by the man who found Livingstone, bound in the publisher's half brown gilt morocco, all edges gilt.

OCLC: 44656370 cites a Demy quarto edition de luxe, limited to 250 copies. This copy, bound in half brown gilt decorated morocco, seems to be an edition between the "de luxe" and the ordinary edition, but there is no statement within.

8vo, 2 volumes, Vol 1. xiv,[1],547. Vol. 2 xvi, 540pp, 2 frontispiece portraits of Stanley, 43 plates & 102 illustrations, 3 folding pocket maps, housed in the rear pockets of the volumes. Bound in the publishers half-morocco and marbled boards, with matching marbled endpapers. Rubbing at edges of boards, corners and spines. All edges gilt.
A very desirable copy of a classic African exploration.
